Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to bring to your notice that there has been a significant increase in walkers leaving or throwing their garbage behind and creating a mess on the countryside near my residence on 4th Street.

Walking is a habit I have inculcated ever since I have been a child, along with my parents. I thoroughly enjoy walking with them around the countryside park which is very close to my residence. We have a ritual of walking together post dinner on a regular basis, it allows us all to interact with each other along with keeping ourselves healthy.

During the last entire week, I have noticed that there has been an increase in the litter around the park and the street across my residence, It not just includes chocolate rappers, papers but also have animal dunk left on the streets.

I would like to suggest if you could highlight this issue in your newspaper to educate all the walkers about using the waste bins instead of throwing thrash on the streets and creating a mess.

I look forward to your support!

Kind regards,

Irteqa Rehmani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that you enjoy walking with your parents in the nearby countryside park, describe the litter, and ask the newspaper to raise awareness. The personal detail about walking after dinner and its benefits helps extend the first point. The description of the problem is also relevant, though it could be more precise about how widespread or persistent the litter is. Your proposed response—educating walkers to use bins—is clear, but the suggestion would be more fully supported by adding another practical measure, such as providing more bins or arranging regular clean-ups. Overall, the message is complete and its ideas are relevant, with some room to develop the problem and solution further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the concern, gives personal context, describes what you have observed, and ends with a request and sign-off. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and phrases such as “During the last entire week” and “I would like to suggest” help signal the movement between ideas. Some links within sentences are less controlled. For example, the sentence about walking after dinner joins two independent ideas with a comma, and the litter description shifts from the park to the street without clearly explaining their relationship. More precise transitions and sentence boundaries would make the progression smoother. The overall organisation is clear, but cohesion is not consistently flexible or polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the letter, including phrases such as “significant increase,” “thoroughly enjoy,” and “educate all the walkers.” These choices communicate the concern and the personal context clearly. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural word choices and spelling errors that limit precision: “chocolate rappers” should be “chocolate wrappers,” “animal dunk” should be “animal dung,” and “thrash” should be “trash” or “rubbish.” “Inculcated” is also an awkward choice for describing a habit learned in childhood, while “garbage” and “litter” could be used more consistently. These errors do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more natural and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as “Walking is a habit I have inculcated ever since I have been a child” and the sentence explaining how the walks support family interaction and health. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. In “We have a ritual of walking together post dinner on a regular basis, it allows us…,” a comma incorrectly joins two complete clauses; use a full stop or a conjunction. In “it not just includes … but also have,” the verb does not agree with the subject, and the paired structure needs to be formed consistently. The opening sentence is also long and would be clearer if divided. Greater control of clause boundaries, agreement, and sentence construction would improve accuracy.
