Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding an increasing in the amount of litter day by day near the river, where I enjoy my regular walk early in the morning. This place is surrounded by nature and peaceful atmosphere, so in the morning I can breath a fresh air.

Unfortunately, I have seen a significant amount of plastic water bottles and chips wrappers nearby the side walk and this makes environment more polluted. Apart from this, garbage bin has been full and there is no grabage collector truck has been scheduled for the pick up since last week.

A potential solution is to make people aware about the cleanliness and the problem cause by this plastic is crucial to mitigate, before it makes soil infertile. Furthermore, a strict law or heavy fine should be imposed for those who does not care about the nature.

Your prompt response on this matter would be highly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you explain that you walk by the river in the morning because it is peaceful and surrounded by nature, identify bottles and snack wrappers, and propose public awareness and fines. The concern is clear throughout, and the added detail about the full bin and missed collection gives the newspaper a practical aspect of the problem. Your suggestions are relevant, though the awareness proposal is quite general; you could explain how it might be delivered, such as through signs or a local campaign. Overall, the task is covered with relevant support, but developing that solution more specifically would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: the opening explains your concern and enjoyment of the route, the next paragraph describes the litter and collection issue, and the final paragraph offers solutions before closing politely. Paragraphing supports the letter’s purpose, and linking phrases such as “Unfortunately,” “Apart from this,” and “Furthermore” help signal shifts between ideas. Some connections could be smoother: the full-bin and missed-collection detail is related to the litter but could be linked more explicitly to how it contributes to the problem. The closing is appropriate, although the request for a response could be connected more directly to the newspaper’s role in raising public awareness.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “significant amount,” “surrounded by nature,” “mitigate,” and “strict law or heavy fine.” These choices communicate the environmental concern, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations. For example, “an increasing in the amount” is not a natural expression, while “chips wrappers” and “grabage collector truck” need more accurate forms. “Make people aware about the cleanliness” is also awkwardly phrased. Aim for natural combinations such as “a growing amount of litter,” “raise awareness of the problem,” and “waste collection service”; proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “This place is surrounded by nature and peaceful atmosphere, so in the morning…” and “A potential solution is to make people aware…”. The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In “I can breath a fresh air,” the verb form and article use are incorrect; “there is no grabage collector truck has been scheduled” combines incompatible sentence patterns; and “those who does not care” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also missing articles in phrases such as “surrounded by nature and peaceful atmosphere.” Check verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
