Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing with regard to concern about litter problem on walking path. I believe it is important to bring this matter to your attention, as it has had a significant impact on residential area people.

First and foremost, I like walking during the evening time in countryside near by my home after working long busy day and it really helps to make a calm and fresh. During the walking I saw dirty little everywhere. To elobrate, many people come with their pets such as dogs and cats and the pet dirt the path with litter and pet owner did not take the resposibilty to clean the litter after that which makes bad smell and it made difficult for other walkers too.

With respect to the final matter, I would strongly appereciate it if you could put appropriate notice board like clean the path, clean the litter. I believe that taking appropriate acttion eoulf jelp resolve the issue effectively and prevent simillar problems fromeccuring in the future.

Thank you for your timr snd condideration. I look forward to receiving your response.

Your Faithfully,

Vishva Dobariya.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that you walk in the countryside near home after work, describe pet waste on the path, and recommend putting up notices. The purpose of writing to the newspaper is clear, and the concern about the effect on other walkers is relevant. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The description focuses mainly on animal waste and could include other litter or a clearer account of how widespread the problem is. The proposed notices are also quite general; explain who should install them or add another practical measure, such as bins or enforcement. Developing these details would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the reason for writing to your walking experience and then to a suggested solution. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and phrases such as “First and foremost” and “With respect to” signal transitions. However, some linking is mechanical or unclear: “With respect to the final matter” sounds unnatural, and “During the walking I saw dirty little everywhere” does not connect smoothly to the explanation that follows. The opening and closing are present, but the progression within the main paragraph could be clearer. Use straightforward links such as “For example” and “To address this” and make sure each paragraph develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “countryside,” “residential area,” “notice board,” and “resolve the issue,” so the reader can understand the main concern and proposed action. However, the range is limited, and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts of the letter difficult to read. For example, “pet dirt the path with litter” does not express the intended meaning clearly, while “make a calm and fresh” is not a natural phrase. There are also misspellings such as “resposibilty” and “appereciate.” Aim for precise phrases such as “pet owners leave waste on the path” and check spelling carefully; this will make your message clearer and more appropriate for a newspaper letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a sentence explaining how the litter affects other walkers. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For instance, “I am writing with regard to concern about litter problem” needs clearer article use, and “it really helps to make a calm and fresh” has an incomplete construction. In “many people come with their pets … and the pet dirt the path,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the sentence shifts awkwardly between present and past forms. Practise building accurate sentences with articles, agreement, and consistent tense. Breaking long sentences into shorter ones would also help you control grammar and punctuation.
