Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that, I enjoy taking a stroll in our countryside, but recently I have noticed other walkers started to throw garbage while walking.

Our village has a beautiful park, where different individuals like children play with their friends, teenagers hangout, young adults after a hectic work schedule relax, and elderly people group medidate, they spend their time in their own way. Including myself, I walk regularly in the park and like the scenic view, park surrounded by trees and a beautiful lake on the side, which refreshes me after a busy day.

Recently, I have observed many individuals and family coming to park, have started to throw garbage, for an example a couple threw their babies diaper, people taking a walk while eating throw wrappers of chips and biscuits. The park which was beautiful and scenic, now smells and digusts me.

There are a few suggestions that can be done to improve and restore our park. Firstly, you can install garbage bins, so that people start using it. Secondly, signboards to guide the people where the dustbins are placed. So they use it and make a beautiful surrounding for themself and others.

Thanks and regards,

Shenaz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that you enjoy the park’s trees and lake, describe specific rubbish such as a baby’s diaper and food wrappers, and suggest bins and signboards. The letter’s purpose is clear and the examples make the problem relevant. The description of why you enjoy walking is more developed than the proposed solutions, which are brief and do not explain how signs or bins would be maintained or encourage walkers to use them. The opening also says walkers have started throwing rubbish, but the letter could state more directly that you are asking the newspaper to raise awareness or support action. These details keep the response from developing every part equally, although the task is covered overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: purpose, enjoyment of the park, examples of litter, and proposed remedies. Separate paragraphs help the reader identify each part, and transitions such as “Recently” and “Firstly” make the progression easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical, however, particularly the repeated “Secondly”/“So” construction and the repeated references to “park” and “people.” The long sentence listing different groups and their activities is difficult to follow, and “Including myself” does not connect smoothly to the preceding list. Use shorter sentences and clearer referencing—for example, “I visit regularly because its tree-lined paths and lakeside views help me unwind”—to make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic and include some useful descriptive language, such as “scenic view,” “hectic work schedule,” and “restore our park.” However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make the language less natural: “throw garbage” is better expressed as “litter,” “hangout” is informal in this context, and “medidate” and “digusts” are misspelled. “Beautiful” and “park” are also repeated, limiting variety. Aim for more precise environmental vocabulary and check spelling carefully. For instance, “discarded food packaging” and “the area has become unpleasant” would convey the problem more naturally while preserving your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a beautiful park, where…” and a sequence of suggestions. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening has an unnecessary comma after “that,” and “I have noticed other walkers started” needs a clearer verb pattern, such as “I have noticed that other walkers have started…” The sentence beginning “Recently, I have observed…” has an awkward subject and verb construction, while “Firstly, you can install garbage bins” is followed by a fragment: “Secondly, signboards to guide…” Work on complete sentences, consistent verb forms, and punctuation; these corrections would make your varied sentence attempts more controlled.
