Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to bring people's attention on a serious issue of excessive increase in litter in the countryside near to my home through your newspaper.
I have been visiting this countryside for the past ten years, I enjoy spending time there in the park along with my family members. We all visit this park on a regular basis in the evening. After spending hours there, I feel so relaxed as it gives me break from my daily routine.
Last week, I noticed a considerable amount of garbage not only in the park but also in the walkways, including disposals, package wrappers, takeaway food containers that makes park's look untidy and unpleasent. It seems that visitors who visit the park for picnic leave their waste behind. The rotting waste already started attracting several kinds of insects.
I would appreciate it if awareness of the negative consequences of throwing garbage on the ground could be raised among visitors by publishing an article in your newspaper. If this would be continue, people may stop visiting this place and eventually it might be lose its popularity.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope by publising a report about this issue in your newspaper can contribute to resolve it.
Yours faithfully,
Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you walk in the countryside park with your family to relax, describe wrappers, food containers and rotting waste, and ask the newspaper to raise awareness. The purpose is clear from the opening. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The enjoyment of walking is explained, but the location remains general (“the park”), and the proposed response focuses only on a newspaper article. Add a more practical measure, such as providing bins, signs or regular clean-ups, and explain how it could reduce litter. The final sentence also repeats the request for a report rather than adding a distinct suggestion. These details would make the response to the task more complete and specific.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the issue, gives background about your walks, describes what you observed, and then proposes a response. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Last week,” “not only…but also,” and “If this would be continue” help connect ideas. The opening and closing also make the purpose and letter format clear. Some connections are less smooth: the sentence beginning “I have been visiting this countryside…” joins two complete ideas with a comma, and the final paragraph repeats the newspaper-report request. To strengthen the flow, separate the background into clear sentences and use the closing to reinforce the proposed action without restating it.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “excessive increase,” “considerable amount,” “rotting waste,” and “negative consequences.” The examples of litter make the problem understandable, and the tone is generally suitable for a newspaper letter. There are some inaccurate or unnatural choices, however, such as “bring people's attention on,” “disposals,” and “park's look untidy.” Spelling errors in “unpleasent” and “publising” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check word forms: for example, refer to “draw attention to the issue,” “disposable items,” and “make the park look untidy.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and more complex structures, such as “After spending hours there, I feel so relaxed as it gives me break from my daily routine” and the conditional sentence beginning “If this would be continue.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. The opening background sentence is a comma splice, “containers that makes” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “If this would be continue” uses an incorrect verb form. There are also issues with articles and sentence structure in “it might be lose its popularity” and “I hope by publising a report…can contribute.” Review sentence boundaries, agreement, and conditional forms, then proofread each sentence for a complete and correctly formed clause.
