Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the litter that have been thrown on the walks by local public.
In my leisure time, I enjoy walking in the countryside near my home because I love get surrounded by nature. I go on a walkway which includes trees on the both sides. After I walk 3 kms on this walkway then there is a beautiful river on my left side. I feel very happy to walk on this walkway because I don't even realise how the time has gone so fast.
However, there is one problem that I have noticed while walking in the countryside that people throw garbage on the walks. During the walk, they brought snacks and water bottles from the nearby store and throw its wrapper and empty water bottles on the walks. However, there are some garbage bins provided on the walks but they are always full, that is why people throw garbage on the walks.
In order to solve this problem, I am requesting you to send your team on this walkway and capture photographs of litter that have been thrown on the walkways and publish it into the first page of your newspaper. I am pretty sure that it will spread awareness to the public about protecting environment because you are the most famous local newspaper company in this area. Therefore, your newspapers have been read by everyone.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
Kind regards,
Abhi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain why you enjoy the countryside walk, describe discarded snack wrappers and bottles, and propose a response through the newspaper. The details about the trees and river make the location and your enjoyment clear. Your account of the litter is relevant, and you identify full bins as a possible reason for it. The proposed publicity campaign is also understandable, though it is less fully developed than the description: explain how the newspaper’s coverage could lead to practical action, such as more frequent bin collection or additional bins. The letter’s purpose and tone are generally clear, but a more direct, actionable request would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: purpose, enjoyment of the walk, the litter problem, and a proposed solution. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “However,” “In order to solve this problem,” and “Therefore” show the relationships between ideas. Some connections are less smooth or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “walks” and “walkway,” and the final paragraph moves from asking for photographs to claiming that everyone reads the newspaper without fully explaining the link to reducing litter. Use clearer referencing and vary transitions so the progression feels less mechanical. The opening and closing also provide an appropriate letter format.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the topic, with relevant terms such as “countryside,” “garbage bins,” “wrappers,” and “awareness.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision. For example, “litter that have been thrown on the walks” is an awkward way to describe the problem, and “local public” is not a natural expression for the people responsible. “Walks” is also repeated where “path” or “trail” would be more precise. Some phrases, including “love get surrounded by nature,” show an attempt to express a more complex idea but are not idiomatic. Choose natural collocations and vary the vocabulary for rubbish and the walking route.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “that,” and “while,” and the message remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent understanding. For instance, “litter that have been thrown” has subject–verb agreement trouble, while “I love get surrounded” needs a different verb pattern. In “After I walk 3 kms … then there is,” the time clause and main clause are not joined smoothly; a structure such as “After walking three kilometres, I reach…” would be more controlled. There are also errors with articles and number, as in “on the both sides” and “a beautiful river.” Practise accurate verb patterns and sentence construction while retaining your range of clauses.
