Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope this letter meets you well. I am writing to you to bring to your notice about the litters left on the roadside in our hometown Awka.
I enjoy taking a walk near my home every evening because of the health benefits. The calm and the beautiful work of nature in Awka has always been something I look forward to experiencing every evening when I take a walk.
Recently the neatness of our community has been compromised. there food waste lying around the roadside. There are also papers, nylons and leaves scattered all over the place. These litters are not pleasing to the eyes. The decomposed food waste constitute a foul smell in the environment.
I kindly suggest that sanitation workers should be employed to sweep the roadside every morning. Each compound should also be given a big waste containers where they can easily dispose there collected refuse. The sanitary workers should ensure they visit every compound each morning to collect all thr refuse that has been disposed in the general waste bin. doing this will help curtail the litters in our countryyhome.
I hope you consider implementing my suggestions. I look forward to a positive response. Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Oge Frances.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points in the prompt: you explain that you walk for health and enjoy Awka’s natural surroundings, describe food waste, papers and other rubbish, and propose regular sweeping and waste collection. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the suggestions are relevant to a letter to a local newspaper. Your description of the litter’s effects, especially the unpleasant appearance and smell, helps support your concern. To strengthen the response further, develop the proposals with a little more explanation—for example, how residents could be encouraged to use the bins or how the newspaper might help raise awareness. The ideas are clear and supported, although some remain general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening that states its purpose, separate paragraphs for your enjoyment of walking, the litter problem, and possible solutions, followed by a suitable closing. This makes the main progression easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Recently,” “also,” and “I hope” to connect points. However, some connections are basic or repetitive, and the suggestions paragraph would benefit from clearer sequencing: the roles of sanitation workers, household bins, and collection could be presented as distinct steps. A few sentence boundaries and transitions are abrupt, so cohesion is not consistently smooth. More varied, precise links between cause, effect, and proposed action would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “health benefits,” “scattered,” “foul smell,” and “dispose,” and the reader can understand the problem and your proposals. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision. “Litters” is not normally used as a plural count noun here; use “litter” or “pieces of litter.” “Bring to your notice about” is an unnatural phrase, while “nylons” may not clearly identify the plastic bags you mean. There are also spelling errors such as “thr” and “countryyhome.” Aim for more natural expressions and check spelling carefully, especially in key descriptions and recommendations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause in “because of the health benefits” and the relative clause in “where they can easily dispose…”. The message remains understandable, but errors occur often enough to affect accuracy. For example, “there food waste” should be “there is food waste,” and “The decomposed food waste constitute” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “doing this” needs a capital letter, and “Each compound should also be given a big waste containers” has an article and number mismatch. Review agreement, articles, singular and plural forms, and sentence openings; accurate control of these basics will make your proposals clearer.
