Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my concern about increasing amount of litter left behind by the walkers in the countryside near my home. I hope your newspaper will help to rise awareness among the local residents.
I regularly enjoy walking along the countryside
trail near the river which is surrond by green fields.
These walk allows me to enjoy the smoothing view which help me to stay fit and positive.
However, from the past few week I have noticed a considerable increase in rubbish along these path. In addition, huge garbage bags are dump here which look dirty and aslo harm birds and animal.
Here are some measure suggested that could help to solve this issue. Firstly, local council should install bin with proper signage and encourage people for recycling. Secondly, regular community workers should check the public property as result the place stay clean.
I would be appreciate if it could be publish this conern in newspaper encourage society to clean the environment.
Thank you,
Your's Faithfully,
Harvir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that walking by the river among green fields helps you stay fit and positive, describe rubbish and large bags, and propose bins, recycling signs, and community checks. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the request to publish the concern suits a letter to a newspaper. Some details are less fully developed, however. The litter description could be more specific about what you have actually seen, and the proposed checks are vague: it is unclear who the “community workers” are or how often they would act. The letter also shifts between “Dear Sir” and a formal closing. Extending these ideas and maintaining a consistent formal register would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the concern, describe your walks and the litter, suggest solutions, and close with a request to the newspaper. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while “However,” “In addition,” and “Firstly” guide the reader through the points. This organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Secondly, regular community workers should check the public property as result the place stay clean” combines the suggestion and its outcome without a clear grammatical link. The final request also runs together. Use punctuation and linking phrases to show how each action would address the problem, and keep references such as “these path” clear and consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “litter,” “green fields,” “recycling,” and “local residents,” and you attempt more specific expressions such as “considerable increase.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “surrond,” “smoothing view,” “aslo,” and “conern” make parts less polished, while “rise awareness” and “huge garbage bags are dump” are not natural combinations. “Public property” is also less precise than a phrase describing the walking area. The range is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, but greater accuracy with collocations and word forms would make the letter clearer and more natural. Proofread spelling and check unfamiliar phrases in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the countryside trail near the river which is…” and a conditional request in the closing. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “These walk allows,” “which help me,” “from the past few week,” and “bags are dump”; these show problems with agreement, plurals, tense or verb form. The final sentence, “I would be appreciate if it could be publish this conern…,” is also difficult to follow because its clause structure is faulty. Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and verb forms before adding longer clauses.
