Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I walk every morning in a park that is near my home. I enjoy walking there, because firstly, its near my home and secondly, its jogging track is very well maintained. From last few days I am noticing that, there is a litter collecting day by day on my way. For example wrappers, peels of fruits, juice and milk boxes. Today, surprisingly I found a lady throwing her baby diapers behind a tree. There is a school near the park and mostly students use that way to go to their school. This situation is really alarming, for the health of old, adults and young ones.

I want you to address this issue in your newspaper that all people must throw litter in bins, spotted at the nearest places. Parks and local communities must place sign boards, mentioning fines to the people who will left litter at public places.

I hope my suggestion will work for this public issue, moreover if you have any you can add up to this.

Yours faithfully

Munazzah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that the park is close to home and has a well-maintained jogging track, describe several kinds of rubbish, and propose bins, signs and fines. The example of someone leaving a baby’s diapers also makes the problem concrete, while your concern for people using the route explains why it matters. Some ideas, however, are less fully developed: you could say more about why the countryside setting is enjoyable, and explain how the newspaper or local community could help put your proposals into practice. The letter’s purpose is clear, but a more complete closing request to readers or local authorities would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a generally clear sequence: you introduce your walks and the litter, explain its impact, then make suggestions and close. The paragraph break before your proposals helps distinguish the main stages of the letter. You also use linking expressions such as “For example,” “This situation,” and “moreover.” At times, however, connections feel mechanical or unclear. “Firstly” and “secondly” are not needed for two simple reasons, and the final sentence beginning “moreover if you have any” does not clearly identify what the reader might add. Grouping the description and its consequences more deliberately, then making the request and closing in a separate paragraph, would create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate to communicate the topic, and you include specific items such as “wrappers,” “fruit peels,” “juice and milk boxes,” and “baby diapers.” Phrases such as “well maintained” and “public issue” also show an attempt to use language beyond basic descriptions. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, including “a litter collecting day by day,” “spotted at the nearest places,” and “sign boards.” “Old, adults and young ones” is also an awkward way to refer to people of different ages. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for common, accurate collocations such as “litter is accumulating,” “bins placed nearby,” and “people of all ages.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including the explanation of why you enjoy the park and the sentence describing the school nearby. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “its near my home” needs “it’s,” while “From last few days I am noticing” has problems with the time expression and verb form. In “the people who will left litter,” the verb form is incorrect, and “a litter” is not the right construction in “there is a litter collecting.” Punctuation is also uneven, particularly the comma after “because” and the long final sentence. More accurate tense choices and careful checking of verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries would improve control.
