Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the littering issue in a public park loccated in my neighbourhood. I reside in northeast Brampton Ward no 6 and I want to raise awareness regarding cleanliness through your newspaper.
I usually spend my evening time in the same park with my family, particularly with my children because they play with other kids. Furthermore, It is tranquil place in our area where I refresh my mind in nature and perform physical activities, which help me uplift my mood.
Unfortunately, the park has a substantial amount of garbage in almost everywhere, which cause a significant inconvenience for most of the residents who want to spend quality time with their loved ones. I tried to explain the problem to many culprits that I found throwing litter; however, there is not a noticable difference in reducing waste.
In view of these circcumstances, I would therefore like to request you to publish an article regarding this prevailing issue and describe negative consequences of this behaviour.
I hope you will consider my request and take appropriate action to address this at your earlist convenience.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Parminder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The letter is relevant and gives a clear reason for writing, but it only minimally fulfils the task overall. You explain that you enjoy spending time in the park with your family, where your children play and you relax or exercise. However, the description of the litter is very general: “a substantial amount of garbage” does not tell readers what kinds of rubbish you have seen or where it is accumulating. The proposed response is also limited to asking the newspaper to publish an article; more practical suggestions, such as adding bins, arranging clean-ups, or displaying signs, would address the problem more directly. Develop these missing details so the reader can understand both the scale of the issue and possible solutions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the concern, explains your connection to the park, describes the problem, and ends with a request and polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Furthermore,” “Unfortunately,” and “In view of these circumstances” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the connection between the litter problem and your proposed action is not fully developed: the request for a newspaper article follows the complaint, but the letter does not explain how this would lead to practical change. Some linking phrases also feel formulaic. Add a clearer sequence from specific evidence to realistic solutions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal letter, including phrases such as “raise awareness,” “substantial amount,” “significant inconvenience,” and “prevailing issue.” These choices communicate the concern clearly and show an attempt to use more formal vocabulary. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “spend my evening time” would be more idiomatic as “spend my evenings,” and “garbage in almost everywhere” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “loccated,” “noticable,” “circcumstances,” and “earlist.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Aim for precise descriptions of the rubbish—such as food wrappers, bottles, or cans—and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms. For example, “I tried to explain the problem to many culprits that I found throwing litter; however…” combines a relative clause with a contrast, while the final request uses a polite conditional structure. Meaning is generally clear, though some grammatical errors remain. In “a public park located in my neighbourhood,” the article and location phrase need more natural handling; “It is tranquil place” requires an article, and “a substantial amount of garbage … which cause” has a subject–verb agreement error. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Furthermore, It.” Review articles, agreement, and sentence punctuation, while continuing to use varied structures.
