Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to share some information about increasing littering on the footwalk in the countriside near to Smithsfalls road. I have been using this road everyday for a dogwalk and I have realised that garbage and littering have been considerably increased.

It is very beautiful road just outskirt of the town and many people used to go for a walk in the morning with their families. Trees, lakes and farms besides the roads makes it more beautiful. Recently, it come to my attention that people have been throwing plastic bags, water bottle and other garbage on the roads which ruins the experience and enjoyment.

I believe this problem could be solved if our township takes active steps in this matter. They can keep couple of garbage bins where people can throw their stuff. Could you please also write an article in your newspaper to raise awareness in our community? This will be a wonderful steps to mitigate a threat.

Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you walk the road with your dog, describe its countryside setting, identify discarded plastic bags and bottles, and suggest bins and a newspaper article to raise awareness. The purpose is clear and the suggestions are relevant. The description of why you enjoy walking is more developed, with details about the trees, lakes and farms, while the litter’s impact and the proposed actions receive less explanation. For example, you could say how the rubbish affects wildlife or other walkers, and who should maintain the bins. The request to the newspaper is appropriate for the audience. More specific support for the solutions would make the response feel more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the concern, describes the route and the litter, then proposes solutions and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Recently” and “I believe” guide the reader through the message. The sequence is easy to follow, although the opening paragraph combines the purpose with repeated references to litter and could be more concise. The transition from describing the problem to suggesting action is understandable but somewhat abrupt. You could strengthen the connection by briefly stating the effect of the rubbish before introducing your proposals. The closing is suitable, though “Thanks” is less formal than the rest of the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “countryside,” “garbage bins,” “raise awareness” and “mitigate a threat.” These choices make the concern and proposed response clear, and some phrases show an attempt to use more formal language. However, several word choices, collocations and spelling forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “footwalk,” “dogwalk,” “increasing littering” and “a wonderful steps.” “Garbage and littering” is also repetitive, and “threat” is not the most precise description of the problem. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard expressions such as “walking path,” “take my dog for a walk” and “a positive step.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “I believe this problem could be solved if our township takes active steps in this matter.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Trees, lakes and farms … makes” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “it come to my attention” needs a past-tense verb. There are also article and plural problems in “a very beautiful road,” “keep couple of garbage bins” and “plastic bags, water bottle.” The sentence “I have realised that garbage and littering have been considerably increased” uses an incorrect verb construction. Review agreement, articles, plurals and verb forms, while retaining the varied sentence patterns you already attempt.
