Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my concerns regarding increased garbage around the apple lake area. I enjoy living a life away from the city and one of the main reason is easy acsess to nature. I often go for a walk arond the apple lake to enjoy fresh air and the beauty of the nature. Additionally, it also helps to improve my health.
However, I have noticed that individuals have started to litter here and there since last month. Walkers tend to enjoy their coffee while walking, but the empty cups are not disposed properly. Moreover, people have started leaving wrappers, cigarette buts and even dog waste.
Your newspaper is widly popular in our area. I have a request to incourage people to avoid throwing garbage anywhere. You can also appeal to the government to add more dustbins in the area. I hope a strong article on this topic would greatly impact on walker's behavier. Thank you for taking my request in consideration.
Kind Regards,
Nil Paster.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that you value access to nature and walk around Apple Lake, describe discarded cups, wrappers, cigarette ends and dog waste, and propose both a newspaper appeal and more bins. These details make the concern concrete and relevant. The ideas are extended with reasons, such as walking for fresh air and health, and the request is directed appropriately to the newspaper. To make the response more fully developed, explain a little more about the impact of the litter or how the suggested measures could help—for example, where bins might be placed or how walkers could be encouraged to use them. Overall, the task is clearly and effectively addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The organisation is clear and logical: the opening explains your connection to the area, the next paragraph describes the problem, and the final paragraph makes requests. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Moreover,” and “Additionally” help show how the ideas relate, and the letter format is easy to follow. The progression from personal enjoyment to the litter problem and then to solutions is effective. Some connections are slightly mechanical, however, and “Additionally, it also” repeats the same linking function. You could improve flow by varying transitions and making the relationship between the newspaper’s popularity and your request more explicit. The closing is appropriate, though a conventional sign-off such as “Yours faithfully” would make the formal letter structure more consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic and distinguish several kinds of litter, including “empty cups,” “wrappers,” and “dog waste.” Phrases such as “express my concerns” and “appeal to the government” also suit a letter to a newspaper. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “acsess,” “widly,” “incourage,” and “behavier,” and some combinations are unnatural: “garbage anywhere” and “impact on walker’s behaviour” could be expressed more precisely. “Cigarette buts” is also an inaccurate spelling of “cigarette butts.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. Proofreading spelling and learning natural collocations for litter and public campaigns would strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “I often go for a walk … to enjoy fresh air” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraphing supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain. In “one of the main reason is,” the plural noun is needed after “one of the”; “the beauty of the nature” uses an unnecessary article; and “the empty cups are not disposed properly” needs “disposed of” or a more natural passive construction. The final request, “Thank you for taking my request in consideration,” also has an incorrect preposition. Review agreement, articles, and verb-preposition patterns, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
