Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to express my concern over rising littering in the Huron countryside. I adore walking there because, it is calm and serene. I love escaping the urban forest and to get lost within the nature itself. Usually I prefer taking West Oak tr which starts from southern end and crosses the dense forest of Forest Hills conservation.
However, with its rising popularity, I noticed significant rise in the litter left there by other walkers. What makes me worry more is the type of waste, such as plastic wrappers, used baby diapers, and leftover food containers. If those were to consumed by habitats, it can cause severe danger to their life, hence I believe there is more education needed with regards to this matter.
Therefore, it would be great if you could publish an article to raise public awareness through your medium. Yours is the most preferred newspaper in our community and I am sure that your efforts can make a huge impact to preserve our wilderness and ecology.
I hope you take this into consideration and do appropriate to help our community!
Thanks and regards,
Ripesh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three points: you explain that you enjoy the calm countryside and identify the West Oak trail, describe specific rubbish such as plastic wrappers, used diapers and food containers, and ask the newspaper to publish an awareness-raising article. Your concern about possible harm to wildlife gives the issue a clear purpose, and the tone is appropriate for a local newspaper. The proposed response, however, is quite general: education and an article are mentioned, but you do not explain what practical steps readers or local authorities could take. Developing one or two measures—for example, adding bins or signs, or organising clean-ups—would make the solution more fully supported and lift the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The ideas progress in a clear order: your enjoyment of the area, the growing litter problem, and a request for newspaper action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, while linking expressions such as “However” and “Therefore” help signal the shift from the problem to the proposed response. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some connections are less precise, though: “If those were to consumed by habitats” makes the relationship between litter and wildlife difficult to follow, and “Therefore” introduces a request that could be linked more explicitly to the earlier concern. Use clear references such as “these items” and explain how an article could encourage specific action to make cohesion more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic and letter, including “concern,” “serene,” “plastic wrappers,” “public awareness,” and “preserve our wilderness and ecology.” These choices communicate your feelings and the environmental issue clearly, and some less common expressions show an attempt at precision. However, several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “urban forest,” “rising littering,” and “consumed by habitats”; these weaken collocation and meaning. “West Oak tr” also appears incomplete or mistyped. Choose more natural combinations such as “urban environment,” “increase in litter,” and “ingested by wildlife,” and check place names and abbreviations carefully. This would make the vocabulary more consistently precise and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as “I am writing this to express my concern…” and the conditional sentence beginning “If those were to…”. Most meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors show that control is not yet consistent. For example, the comma after “because” is unnecessary, “I noticed significant rise” needs an article, and “were to consumed” requires the passive form “were to be consumed.” The final sentence, “I hope you take this into consideration and do appropriate,” also has an incomplete construction. Review articles, passive verb forms, and sentence punctuation, then proofread each clause to ensure that its verb pattern is complete.
