Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to raise a complaint in your newspaper regarding litter thrown by the walkers in the countryside which is damaging it.
I like going to walk every evening in countryside so that I stay fit and healthy. Last few weeks there was no litter thrown by the walkers, but from the last one month can see litter thrown everywhere. I tried telling them not to thrown but they don't listen to me.
I see alot of things thrown at the corners and on the roads. I see plastic wrapers lying here and there. When people come for walk or run they bring electrolytes with them after taking them they throw the wraper there only. I have also seen people throwing left over food.
I tried calling the local authorities many times but they didn't pick my call. After calling for almost one week they picked my call the wrote the complain but there is no action on that till now.
There should be strict actions on the people who throw the litter and fine should be there for them. Local authorities should clean the area one a week.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Aaryat

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that you walk in the countryside to stay fit, describe plastic wrappers and leftover food, and propose fines and regular cleaning. The complaint is clear and relevant, and the account of contacting the authorities adds useful context. However, the location remains general—you do not identify a particular countryside area or route—and the reasons for enjoying the walks are only briefly stated. The proposed measures are relevant, but could be developed by explaining how fines would be enforced or who should organise clean-ups. This covers the task well overall, while some points are less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: purpose, enjoyment of walking, examples of litter, attempts to report it, and suggested action. Paragraphs separate these main stages, and phrases such as “Last few weeks” and “After calling for almost one week” help show the timeline. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Last few weeks there was no litter… but from the last one month can see…” needs a clearer contrast and reference to who can see the litter. The final suggestions would also connect more smoothly to the preceding account if you explicitly stated that these are your recommendations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the issue, including “plastic wrappers,” “left over food,” “local authorities,” and “strict actions.” However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings are inaccurate, which makes the letter less natural. “Litter thrown” is repeated and would be more idiomatically expressed as “litter left behind” or “littering.” “Electrolytes” is not the clearest term for the containers walkers discard; “sports-drink bottles” would be more precise. There are also spelling errors such as “alot,” “wrapers,” and “complain.” More precise, varied wording and careful proofreading would strengthen the message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate the main points using mostly simple sentences, with some attempts to combine ideas, such as “When people come for walk or run they bring electrolytes with them…” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur in verb forms, articles, and tense. For example, “I like going to walk” and “I tried telling them not to thrown” have faulty verb patterns, while “from the last one month can see” lacks a clear subject and uses an awkward tense construction. In “they picked my call the wrote the complain,” the clauses are not correctly joined. Practise accurate verb patterns and use a wider range of controlled complex sentences.
