Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to raise a concern regarding the waste I saw near to a lake beside my house.
First of all, I would like to thank you for keeping the suroundings clean. I usually go for a walk in the nearest park after work; I enjoy looking at the sunset near to the beach. Sometimes, I consider to do cycling in a newly built cycle track, which helps me to stay fit.
However, last week, when I was walking to a nearest lake, I saw a few snack wrappers floating in the water which were were thrown by the other visitors. Also, the garbage bags were overflowing from the bin, hence, people were throwing the waste outside the garbage bin.
I would therefore be grateful if you could hire a management team, who can take care of the garbage bins and to change the garbage bags, when required. As a result, people can throw the waste at the designated spots.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Harshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you explain that you walk in the park after work to enjoy the sunset, describe wrappers in the lake and overflowing bins, and propose hiring a team to manage the bins. The letter’s purpose is clear and the tone is appropriately formal. However, some details are less fully developed than others. The opening refers to waste near a lake beside your house, while the walking description mentions a park and beach, so the locations could be connected more clearly. The proposed management team is relevant, but you could explain how regular checks or public notices might also discourage littering. Developing these points would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the concern, gives background about your walks, describes the litter, and ends with a request and appropriate closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “However” and “I would therefore” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less clear or slightly mechanical. For example, “First of all, I would like to thank you for keeping the surroundings clean” does not clearly relate to the newspaper or the later complaint, and the shift between the park, beach, and lake could be smoother. Make the relationship between these places explicit and use linking phrases to show how the observations lead to your proposed solution.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “concern,” “snack wrappers,” “overflowing,” and “designated spots.” These choices communicate the problem and proposed action clearly, and the formal letter style is generally appropriate. There are some spelling and word-choice or collocation inaccuracies, such as “suroundings” and “garbage bags were overflowing from the bin”; the latter is understandable but not a natural way to describe the situation. “Consider to do cycling” is also an awkward expression. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary for litter management, such as regular collection or maintenance, would help you express the solution with greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the time clause “when I was walking to a nearest lake” and the conditional request “I would therefore be grateful if you could hire…”. Most of the message remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. In “I consider to do cycling,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “consider cycling.” The phrase “a nearest lake” also has an article error, and “who can take care of the garbage bins and to change…” mixes structures within the same clause. There is also an accidental repetition in “were were thrown.” Review verb patterns, articles, and parallel structure, then proofread for duplicated words to improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
