Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention the garbage being thrown in the countryside.

I have been taking morning walks in the park near the countryside for the past two years. A lake sits in the center of the park, and the morning breeze makes it even more pleasant.

Unfortunately, I have observed a lot of litter and rubbish near the park. I think the main reason is residents have increased in number over time therefore, many children come to play in the park in the evening. Thus, there are no cleaners available to clean the park premises.

I was wondering if it would be at all possible to appoint a public space cleaner to particularly look after the park so that the place is clean for people to use. Moreover, I think more dustbins should be placed outside the park, and strict rules should be implemented to keep the park clean.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours sincerely,

Dua E Akhtar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that you enjoy morning walks and describe the lake and breeze, report litter in the park, and propose a cleaner, more bins, and stricter rules. The purpose is clear and the tone is suitably polite for a letter to a newspaper. However, the description of the litter is general: “a lot of litter and rubbish” does not tell readers what you have actually seen. The explanation that more residents and children are responsible is also asserted rather than supported, and the link between this and the lack of cleaners is not fully clear. Give concrete examples of the rubbish and develop the cause or impact more carefully to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised clearly, with separate paragraphs for the reason for writing, your walks, the problem, and possible solutions. This gives the reader a logical progression, and phrases such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover,” and “I look forward to hearing back from you” help signal shifts and close the letter appropriately. The sequence within the paragraph about the cause is less smooth: “therefore” and “Thus” make the reasoning sound mechanical, and the connection between more children visiting and there being no cleaners is not explicit. You could improve the flow by explaining the relationship directly and varying the transitions rather than stacking them. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, with some room for more natural cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes relevant terms such as “countryside,” “litter,” “public space cleaner,” and “strict rules.” The language is generally clear, but some choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Garbage being thrown” suggests deliberate dumping, while the task concerns litter left by walkers; “litter and rubbish” repeats the same idea without adding detail. “Park premises” is also an awkward collocation in this context. More precise wording, including names of specific items you have seen, would make the complaint more convincing and show greater control of vocabulary. The meaning remains clear, but word choice is not consistently natural or exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled, including “A lake sits in the center of the park, and the morning breeze makes it even more pleasant.” The conditional suggestion beginning “I was wondering if it would be at all possible” also shows an attempt at a more complex, polite structure. Some errors remain. In “the main reason is residents have increased in number over time therefore,” the clauses need clearer grammatical connection and punctuation; for example, use “the main reason is that the number of residents has increased.” The sentence beginning “Thus” also needs a clearer link to the preceding idea. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate clause construction and punctuation would strengthen control.
