Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
This is Vishwa Vyas being the resident of Barrie locality , I am writing you to draw your attention towards litter on walk ways and trails near Allandale and Bayfield making walking an unpleasant experience.
As walking makes me feel more relaxed and help me unwind my day , I prefer walking at the place surrounding natural environment like trees and lakes. This trail in Allandale is a perfect spot away from city's hustle , provides me some serene and peaceful time. I have been going there since a year, even to spend some quality time with family, this is a decent place.
However, since past couple of months I have started to notice a gradual increase in litter damaging its environment. As more number of visitors prefer spending their time , there are seen empty coffee containers , food packets and other garbage being thrown leaving place with the foul smell.
I would appreciate if more garbage bins are allocated in the surrounding areas , making it accessible for visitors to use them. This would help to retain its beauty and attract more visitors. I hope my request would be given attention.
Yours faithfully,
Vishwa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you explain that walking helps you relax and identify the Allandale trail, describe discarded coffee containers and food packets, and recommend adding more bins. The purpose of writing to the newspaper is also clear from the opening, and the closing is appropriate. Your ideas are relevant and supported with details, such as the trail’s trees and lakes and the foul smell caused by rubbish. To make the response more fully developed, explain the litter’s effects or give a further practical measure, such as regular clean-ups or signs asking visitors to take rubbish home. The suggestion about bins is useful, but its implementation could be described more specifically.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the concern, explain why the trail matters to you, describe the worsening litter, and end with a proposed solution. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and transitions such as “However” signal the shift from enjoyment to the problem. The opening and sign-off also suit a formal letter. Some links between ideas are less smooth: the sentence beginning “As more number of visitors prefer spending their time” does not clearly connect visitor numbers to the litter, and the final paragraph moves quickly from bins to attracting visitors. Make these relationships explicit and use punctuation consistently around clauses and sentence boundaries to make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “serene,” “gradual increase,” “foul smell,” and “retain its beauty.” These choices communicate your concern and give the letter some descriptive detail. There are also several imprecise or unnatural expressions, such as “walk ways,” “draw your attention towards,” “empty coffee containers,” and “more number of visitors.” Some repetition of general words such as “place” and “time” limits precision. Choose more natural collocations and specific terms—for example, “walking paths,” “bring this issue to your attention,” and “disposable coffee cups.” This would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal without changing its clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “As walking makes me feel more relaxed…” and “I would appreciate if more garbage bins are allocated…”. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “walking … help me unwind” needs subject–verb agreement, while “This trail … provides me” follows an incomplete opening structure in the first paragraph. “I have been going there since a year” also uses an incorrect time expression and tense pattern. Review agreement, article use, and how introductory clauses connect to the main clause. Breaking up the long opening sentence and checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb would improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex grammar.
