Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to bring to your attention that I discover that the popular Expoyo village not far from Ibadan in the city i currently reside has been full of dirt recently. I visit there more often and stroll around because of the beautiful Iseyin water spring that has atracted many tourists which made me also visit there more often.

I notice that many debris from farms are found on the highways which are as a result of transportation of raw materials to various cities. Moreover, i discovered that the bushes are not well cultivated and many humans and animals wastes are found there . However, all these may stop tourists from visiting the town in next few years.

I would appreciate if there are more public toilets constructed and employing roadside cleaners to keep everywhere tidy with proper monitoring. If you need any evidence regarding the picture of the exact location for inspection, you can send me a mail and I would reply in the next 48 hours

I look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Your faithfully,

Kehinde Idowu.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the main points by explaining that you enjoy strolling near Iseyin water spring, describing debris and waste, and proposing public toilets and roadside cleaners. The purpose of writing to the newspaper is clear, and you also indicate the possible effect on tourism. However, some parts are less fully developed: the description focuses partly on farm debris on highways and poorly cultivated bushes, rather than clearly identifying litter left by walkers, such as bottles, wrappers, or food packaging. The proposed measures are relevant, but you could explain how monitoring or public notices might discourage visitors from dropping rubbish. A more consistent formal letter style, including the requested opening, would also make the response better suited to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening explains your concern and enjoyment of the area, the next paragraph describes the problem, and the final body paragraph offers solutions. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “If you need any evidence” help connect ideas, and the reader can follow the main message. To strengthen progression further, make the relationship between the litter, its source, and the proposed actions more explicit; for example, the shift from farm debris to tourist numbers is somewhat abrupt. Some sentences also contain several ideas at once, which makes the flow less smooth. Use clearer paragraph focus and more precise references so that each point builds naturally on the previous one.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “debris,” “raw materials,” “tourists,” “public toilets,” and “roadside cleaners.” These choices communicate the general issue and show an attempt to use less common terms. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “full of dirt,” “many humans and animals wastes,” and “bushes are not well cultivated.” There are also spelling and capitalization slips, including “atracted” and lowercase “i,” which reduce the overall accuracy. Aim for more natural expressions for litter and public spaces, and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish rubbish left by walkers from waste associated with farms or transport.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the beautiful Iseyin water spring that has attracted many tourists” and a conditional sentence beginning “If you need any evidence.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the letter. For example, “I discover” does not fit the past-time context, “I would appreciate if” needs a grammatical construction such as “I would appreciate it if,” and “in next few years” is missing an article. There are also inconsistent capital letters and punctuation, as in “i” and the extra space before a full stop. Review tense consistency, articles, and sentence boundaries to make your varied structures more controlled.
