Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing regarding a concerning issue that I have observed regularly in one part of the rural area where I live, and this problem is the wastage of used items on the pedestrians walk.I am keen on going on a morning walk to spend some time in the fresh air and stay healthy; for this, I choose the quiet environment, especially in the countryside.
It really makes me disappointed when I catch a considerable amount of waste material such as plastic bottles and used polythene bags normally other are throwing without careful considerations. Consequently, it can create a barrier for me, and I think for others who are enjoying their morning routine, since it causes bad smells.
I would like to request that you kindly take some effective measures to reduce this pressing issue, such as providing garbage bins along this route and introducing some notice boards on the side of the walking area so that people will be aware of their responsibilities. It would be grateful if you could understand my concern and will do some improvements for this concern.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Bhagwant Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose for writing to the newspaper. You explain that you walk in the countryside to enjoy fresh air and stay healthy, identify plastic bottles and polythene bags, and propose bins and notice boards. These ideas are relevant and supported with some explanation, such as noting that litter causes bad smells and affects other walkers. The request for action is also clear. To make the ideas more fully developed, specify where the litter is most noticeable or explain how the proposed measures could encourage walkers to dispose of rubbish responsibly. The formal letter format and closing are suitable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs: the opening explains the issue and your reason for walking, the next paragraph describes the litter and its effects, and the final main paragraph suggests solutions. This gives the reader a logical progression from problem to action. Linking expressions such as “Consequently” and “such as” help connect ideas, and the closing is appropriate. Some connections are less smooth, particularly the long sentence beginning “It really makes me disappointed,” where the description, effect, and reference to other walkers run together. The repeated use of “concern” in the final paragraph also makes the ending feel less controlled. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary references to the issue.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “rural area,” “considerable amount,” “pressing issue,” and “effective measures.” These choices help convey a formal complaint, and the reader can understand the problem and your suggestions. However, some word choices and combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “wastage of used items,” “pedestrians walk,” and “without careful considerations.” “Waste material” is also less precise than naming the rubbish directly. Aim for natural collocations and precise terms for the place and litter; this would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message, but control of less common expressions is not yet consistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the purpose clause “to spend some time in the fresh air and stay healthy” and the result clause beginning “since it causes bad smells.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “normally other are throwing” has an unclear subject and verb form, while “It would be grateful if you could understand my concern and will do some improvements” has an incorrect construction and inconsistent verb pattern. There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary problems, such as the run-on around “walking area so that people.” Review subject–verb structure, conditional requests, and punctuation when joining clauses to improve accuracy.
