Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I strongly believe that Olympics or Football Word Cup like international events bring together different countries and build up diplomatic relations. This kind of sports activities lead to healthy cultural diversity and people from different parts of the word gets the opportunity to learn about each other.
Around 20 years ago, diplomatic relations between Australia and England were not as good. During 2015 World Cup, both countries decided that they would play against each other and would promote healthy rivalry. After that World Cup, their diplomatic relations becomes normal. Also, one third of World population had no any idea about cultural diversity of South Africa but everyone get to knew during Tri Nation series .
Although competition is inevitable, nations should rise above their differences and rivarly. Those who thought that these kind of events creat
competition are true to some extent. Match between Pakistan and India cause much disturbance and increase competiton and rivarly amongst nations. This competition leads to abnormal diplomatic relations and tension between two countries.
I firmly believe that intternatonal sporting events do far more good than harm. Overall, sporting events should be viewed as a platform for bringing nations closer together rather than creating divisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You give a clear overall opinion that international sporting events can bring countries closer, and you also acknowledge the opposing view through the Pakistan–India example. However, the discussion is only partial: the claim that events improve relations is supported by examples, but the Australia–England account is difficult to follow and the South Africa example is not clearly connected to the argument. The opposing view is mentioned briefly rather than explained in depth. The response also contains 200 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250; this limits the space available to develop both views and provide relevant, clear support. Explain each example accurately and show how it demonstrates either cooperation or rivalry.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, examples supporting cooperation, a paragraph on rivalry, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the two views and your position. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and some links between claims are unclear. For example, the shift from Australia and England to South Africa in the second paragraph does not explain how the examples relate to one another. Linking phrases such as “Although” and “Overall” are useful, but the argument relies on a small number of transitions and does not consistently guide the reader through cause and effect. Use one focused paragraph for each view, with clear topic sentences and explanations connecting each example to your point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “diplomatic relations,” “cultural diversity,” “healthy rivalry,” and “competition,” which helps communicate the subject. There is also an attempt to vary expression rather than repeat only basic terms. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less clear, as in “Word Cup,” “word,” “rivarly,” and “intternatonal.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “build up diplomatic relations” and “abnormal diplomatic relations.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would make your examples and claims easier to understand and would strengthen the academic tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the concession “Although competition is inevitable” and the relative clause “Those who thought that these kind of events…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to distract the reader. Examples include “people … gets,” “their diplomatic relations becomes,” and “everyone get,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect. There are also problems with verb forms and sentence construction, such as “had no any idea” and “get to knew.” The range of structures remains limited, and complex attempts are not always accurate. Practise checking agreement and verb forms, and build longer sentences from accurate clauses before adding more complexity.
