IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There has been ongoing debate about whether international events bring peace amoung countries or they create more hatred among them. Some individuals believe that such sports should be held to bring the countries together and players get to know each other, get a chance to exchange strategies, whereas others argue that the intense pressure to win for one's country overrides sportsmanship. The essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, proponents of playing together argue that sports are the only way people get to know opponents properly as media already defame and give false analysis between countries and promote hatred. These games act as a global language, reminding us that our shared love for sport is greater than our political differences. For example, when athletes and fans from every corner of the earth gather in one place, boders fade and humanity takes center stage. Therefore, it is often claimed that this creates mutual respect and cultural exchange.
On the other hand, critics contend that playing internationally fosters an environment of bitterness, these games make everyone:the players as well as the audience, super tribal and aggressive about their own country. Such games often do more divide than unite. This view point is supported by the fact that social media plays a platform of online assulting, using the platforms like Instagram and TikTok to agrressively prove their nation's superiority, dominance, and culturl pride over others. The most realistic example we have is of India and Pakistan cricket matches. As a result the game become more of a war and lack of fair play.
From my perspective, such games should be done internationally because this promotes cultual exchange and players get to know the strategies and learn from each other. Social media should also share positive views to overcome the hatred created by ongoing tweets etc.
In conclusion, while both views have their own merits, I beleive that such games should continue as these are more practical and beneficial in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a consistent preference for international events, so the response fulfils the main parts of the task. The first perspective is supported by the idea that sport can act as a “global language” and encourage cultural exchange. You also give a relevant example in the discussion of India and Pakistan cricket. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the claim that media “defame” countries is not clearly connected to how sporting events counter this, and the example of India and Pakistan would be stronger with a specific illustration of either hostility or cooperation. Your opinion is clear, but the suggestion that social media should share positive views is brief. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and concrete support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion, and the ideas generally progress logically. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, links within sentences are occasionally awkward or unclear, as in “critics contend that playing internationally fosters an environment of bitterness, these games make everyone…”; this joins two claims without a clear grammatical or logical connection. The transition from the India–Pakistan example to the conclusion that the game becomes “more of a war” also needs explanation. Use clearer sentence boundaries and make the relationship between examples and claims explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “sportsmanship,” “political differences,” “cultural exchange,” and “mutual respect.” Phrases such as “shared love for sport” and “sports act as a global language” help express the positive view effectively. You also attempt more forceful language, including “super tribal and aggressive” and “nation’s superiority,” but some choices are imprecise or unnatural, which reduces clarity. There are several spelling errors, including “amoung,” “boders,” “assulting,” “agrressively,” and “cultual.” “Media already defame” and “plays a platform” are also awkward word combinations. Check spelling carefully and choose more precise collocations; this will make your ideas sound more natural and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “games, reminding us that…” and a subordinate clause beginning “while both views have their own merits.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “these games make everyone” follows a comma splice, while “the game become” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “when athletes and fans…” runs directly into “Therefore” without a space or clear sentence boundary, and “the game… lack of fair play” is not a complete, well-formed clause. Aim to separate independent clauses correctly and check agreement and sentence completeness. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
