IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

People have edifferent views regarding whether international sports events are a good source of relationship between countries, while others believe that such events like The Olympics or the football only increase compettion, rather than bringing people closer. Although both perspectives have their own merits, I believe that people take these events as a personal and it could create distance, enemity and feeling of hatred.

On the one hand , many people believe that international sports events are held to integrate and unite nations, because when a sport is played at national level, it promote global solidarity. This is mainly because such events build international cooperation, which can result in a peaceful companionship among people. For example, we could see people were crazy about The Football World Cup and were ready to go at Argentina to watch and support their favorite player and country as well.

On the other hand, others argue that such events could create enemity, hatred and bitterness among people and countries as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You introduce both viewpoints and state a position: you believe these events can create distance and hatred. However, the response addresses the task only partially. The argument that sports can unite countries is briefly explained through “global solidarity” and cooperation, but the Argentina example is unclear and does not show how the event brings nations together. The opposing view is only named in the final paragraph; it has no explanation or supporting example, and your own opinion is not developed beyond the opening. The response also falls 84 words short of the required minimum. To strengthen the answer, explain both views in separate, developed paragraphs, support each with a relevant example, and clarify why you consider competition more divisive than unifying.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, and “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” signal the two sides of the discussion. The opening also gives the reader a general sense of your position. However, there is no clear progression after the second viewpoint is introduced: the final paragraph ends after one claim, without explanation, an example, or a conclusion. Some connections between ideas are difficult to follow, particularly the move from international cooperation to people travelling to Argentina to support a player. Develop each paragraph around one main point, then connect the explanation and example explicitly. A concluding paragraph that restates your view would also make the overall organisation more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “global solidarity,” “international cooperation,” and “peaceful companionship,” and the reader can generally understand the subject. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “a good source of relationship,” “take these events as a personal,” and “ready to go at Argentina.” Spelling errors, including “edifferent,” “compettion,” and “enemity,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural phrases that express the intended meaning precisely, such as “foster relations between countries,” “take the competition personally,” and “travel to Argentina.” Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating “hatred” and “enemity” without adding more specific vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use some complex sentence forms, including the opening contrast with “while” and the explanation beginning “This is mainly because.” These attempts show some range, but control is uneven, and errors sometimes make the meaning unclear. For example, “when a sport is played at national level, it promote” has an agreement error; “people take these events as a personal” is grammatically incomplete; and “were ready to go at Argentina” has an incorrect preposition within the sentence pattern. There are also punctuation and spacing problems, such as the space before the comma in “On the one hand ,”. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, complete sentence patterns, articles, and prepositions, while keeping complex sentences clear and manageable.
