Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era, some individuals think that the global sports tournaments plays a significant role to establish sportsman spirit between several nation such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup. Others believe that these events replace friendship into competition between nations. This essay will discuss both views before giving my own opinion.

To begin with, the international tournaments helps to share cultural and traditional values of different countries. In other words, players usually explore several things on sports events such as local food, way of living in different areas, and connect with local culture, when they travel other countries. For instance, after hosting Tokyo Olympic in Japan, a lot of countries makes different trade deal with Japan. Therefore, sports events help nations to share their identity on global level.

On the flip side of it, some countries consider a sports event as a war with other countries, specially when they already have some conflicts. To explain it, if any two countries already have some conflicts in between, during matches it put more aggression in players. For example, players refused to handshake between India and Pakistan Cricket match because both nations facing boarder conflicts, cricket match created competition rather then friendship. Hence, sometime sports games disturb the situation between nation, those already suffering with wars.

To sum up, while there are some nations use playground as a war ground due their ongoing conflicts, I think the benefits of having international events outweigh the disadvantages, it help nation to share their moral and traditional value, which can lead into trade deals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of cultural exchange and trade deals, as well as the negative impact of political tensions on sportsmanship. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding trade deals after the Tokyo Olympics is a bit vague and could be more effectively linked to the core argument. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is consistent with a band 6 level, as some points are slightly under-developed or rely on generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'On the flip side of it', and 'To sum up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'On the flip side of it' and 'To explain it'. Additionally, there are some issues with referencing and flow, particularly in the final paragraph where the sentence structure becomes a bit run-on. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated and varied to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'sportsman spirit', 'global level', and 'aggression'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'replace friendship into competition' (should be 'turn friendship into competition') and 'boarder conflicts' (should be 'border conflicts'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Some phrasing is repetitive or slightly unnatural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('tournaments plays', 'tournaments helps', 'countries makes'), missing articles ('on sports events'), and incorrect preposition usage ('travel other countries'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences, particularly in the conclusion. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control over complex structures is inconsistent.
