Student answer (Band 6.0)
Sports have played a vital role in building relations with other people. Some people believe that sports event such as, Olympics or the Football world cup are good relation building activities with other countries. Whereas other believe quite opposite that it creates a sense of competition between countries. I will articulate both perspectives with my opinion.
First and foremost, the individuals who are in favor of these events state that, international sports event generate good friendship between different countries players. To elaborate, starting with organizational authorities which are responsible to manage these events. These international boards consist of members from different countries organize meetings before any events, relation building starts from here. To get in-depth understanding of this I will explain the working of ICB (International Cricket Board), first they setup meeting with all the member countries, one of the country hosts the meeting. Diplomats of all the member countries take part in the meeting where they talk with each other that enhance good relations with them, moreover these meetings act as a stepping stone in building friendly ties with other nations. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, though the essay is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence. While the first body paragraph is well-developed with a specific example (ICB), the second paragraph is underdeveloped due to the premature conclusion. The position is clear, but the lack of a concluding paragraph and the unfinished nature of the argument prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure you allocate enough time to fully develop the second perspective and provide a summary conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay uses some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'To elaborate', and 'Nevertheless' to signal progression. However, the logical flow is disrupted by the abrupt ending. Paragraphing is attempted, but the transition between the introduction and the body is slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure is compromised by the incomplete state of the text. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that the essay reaches a logical, complete conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'diplomats', 'renowned', and 'organizational authorities'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'extant' instead of 'extent' and 'sports event' instead of 'sports events'. The range is sufficient to communicate ideas, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would improve the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Some people believe that sports event such as, Olympics' (missing articles and incorrect punctuation) and 'other believe quite opposite' (missing subject/adverb). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
