Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of hosting events versus the pressure placed on athletes. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about China's training methods is a good example but lacks depth in its connection to the broader argument about international relations. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from more detailed explanations to fully explore the implications of the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'These sports not only the medium to go other countries'. Additionally, there are instances where referencing is unclear, and the flow between sentences occasionally feels disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'revenue' and 'essential', but there are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'its like torcher for them' (torture) and 'unit countries' (unite). Some phrasing is repetitive, and the range is somewhat limited, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision in word choice is a recurring issue.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('many people has opinions', 'some individual believes') and incorrect verb forms ('people visits', 'China starts preparing'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting and indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction and agreement rules.
