Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sports play an indispensable role in people's overall well-being. While some people argue that international tournaments such as The Olympics and the Football World Cup, are an effective means of bringing nations together, others believe that these events can result in competitions between countries rather than globalization. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe organizing sports events internationally can help bring people together in diverse ways.

On the one hand, one of the primary reasons why international sports events can be a better way to bring countries together is that they provide people with trade opportunities globally. When sports events are organized at an international level, spectators may have to visit other countries. This enables them to gain business ideas and explore different cultures and languages. Consequently, people from different countries are more likely to develop brotherhood among each other, which can contribute to a substantial rise in global collaboration.

On the other hand, opponents of international sports events believe that these events can create competitions instead of strengthening relationships. Many sports rely highly on winning, which can lead players to develop competitive behavior. As a result, these global sports tournaments can end up as competitions and sometimes lead to misunderstanding and disagreements. For example, The Cricket World Cup generally are organized in different countries often places considerable pressure on India and Pakistan instead of strengthening their friendship.

In conclusion, while global sports events should be regarded as an effective way of brining countries together, I believe they can rarely create competition. In my opinion, their benefits significantly outweigh its drawbacks, thus, they can definitely help strengthen globalization.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of trade opportunities and the competitive nature of sports. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the link between international sports and 'trade opportunities' is asserted but not clearly explained or supported with a concrete example. The conclusion contains a contradiction, stating that events 'rarely create competition' after the body paragraph explicitly argued that they do. To reach a higher band, ensure that arguments are fully extended and that the conclusion aligns logically with the points previously discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence where 'its' is used to refer to 'benefits' (plural), which is grammatically inconsistent. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the logical flow within the conclusion is weakened by the contradictory statement regarding competition.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'indispensable', 'globalization', and 'collaboration'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice. For example, the phrase 'rarely create competition' in the conclusion seems to be a misuse of the word 'rarely' given the context of the argument. Additionally, 'globalization' is used in a way that does not quite fit the context of international sports events. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'The Cricket World Cup generally are organized' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'brining' is a spelling error. The sentence 'their benefits significantly outweigh its drawbacks' contains a pronoun-antecedent disagreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor slips in spelling and pronoun usage.
