Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few people claim that the international sports events like The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are the opportunities to bring all countries together whereas other people think that these only creates competition not the friendship between countries. In this essay, I will discuss both views and will also discuss my opinion with suitable examples.

To commence with, the games at international level bring countries together. To explain, in the international games, participants are from all around the world show their talent worldwide. In other words, like in the Football World Cup, footballers from different nations play together and the winner team gets the trophy. It shows the hardwork, dedication towards the nation and the talent of players.

On the flip side, we can not deny the fact that there were so many occasions in the past which leads to conflict between two opposing teams of different countries. To explicate, players from the countries which does not have friendly relationships end up fighting on the pitch. For example, Cricket World Cup 2016, match between India and Pakistan did not went well because the players were fighting on the ground and match was dismissed.

In conclusion, although, the international matches can create serious issues within two opposing country teams, yet, it is also an opportunity to present one’s country in front of world. With this, not only people know about their country but also the respect for the players increases. Furthermore, it also helps to boost countries economy where the event is organized.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding international unity is quite generic, focusing on the presence of participants rather than the deeper social or political impact. Similarly, the example of the India-Pakistan cricket match is used to support the negative view, but the explanation lacks depth regarding why such events might foster hostility. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed reasoning and clearer links between the examples and the prompt's core themes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'On the flip side', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph feels abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'With this' in the final paragraph, which does not clearly link back to the preceding ideas. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will help the essay read more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'bring countries together' and 'fighting on the pitch'. While these are accurate, they do not demonstrate a sophisticated command of language. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'explicate' (which is overly formal and slightly misused in this context) and 'boost countries economy' (which should be 'boost a country's economy'). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('these only creates competition'), article usage ('in front of world'), and tense errors ('did not went well' should be 'did not go well'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tense usage, while also attempting to vary your sentence structures with more complex clauses.
