Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued whether international sports matches, such as the Football World Cup or The Olympic, can bring countries together or it develops more competition feeling than friendship. Although playing against another country create competition, it is often a healthy competition, and sometimes audience start liking players from another team because of their performance.

One of the primary reasons why international sports competitions are crucial to make relations with other countries is that not only does it allow players to visit other countries to play matches, but it also connect local public with other countries. This is largely because when people get to know about the opposite team, they generally try to know about the culture and history of that nation, especially, if they start admiring players from another team. Additionally, player who visit another country for their competition, they get an opportunity to stay there for a while, and they can explore the country and the hospitality they offer. Indian Premier League, for example, which not only offer an opportunity to Indian cricketer to play, but it invites cricketers from various countries, which make foreign people also to watch the matches.

People, who argue that sports activities bring competition more than friendship believe this because sometimes countries take competition more serious and they do not try develop healthy relations with other. For example, India and Pakistan do not have good relations, but they just participate in cricket just to compete against each other. Therefore, it is a rare chance when two nations paly more attention on competition than friendship.

To conclude, while sports matches create competition among countries, there is a rare chance when countries take competition more serious, usually these matches allows countries to make a significant relationships.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of cultural exchange and the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how sports foster relations could be more deeply explored with more specific examples beyond the Indian Premier League. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks a strong summary of the main arguments. Overall, the position is clear, but the depth of support for the arguments is inconsistent, which is characteristic of a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'For example', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the transition in the final paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example, 'they' in the third paragraph could refer to either the countries or the people. While the progression of ideas is generally coherent, the use of linking words is sometimes repetitive or slightly forced, keeping the response at a Band 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'hospitality' and 'significant relationships', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are imprecise or slightly unnatural, such as 'competition feeling' instead of 'competitive spirit' or 'make relations' instead of 'build relations'. There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'player who visit' (should be 'players who visit'). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it develops', 'player who visit', 'matches allows') and article usage (e.g., 'The Olympic'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. The errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms, which is consistent with a Band 5.5 or 6.0. I have awarded 6.0 as the errors do not cause significant confusion.
