Student answer (Band 6.5)

Sports play crucial part in bringing people together but a fraction of the population find these events competitive and can create friction between teams. I believe that the international sports events are excellent way for nations to celebrate together.

One of the primary reason why events likes The Olympics and Common Wealth Games are popular is the scale of participation of large number of countries. The hosting nation start preparing for the event from few years. The governments discuss the funds with other countries as they need to accomodate international players. They provide them with required diet and equipments so that they can perfom well. All these need ease of communication between nations to maintain political peace. Additionally, people interested in the sports and fans all over the world show support for their teams and their favourite player that creates overall festive atmosphere for everyone. People start celebrating the events as a unity rather than focusing on the competition.

Many sportpersons representing different teams become close friends. Their friendships are adored by fans that brings nations closer. For instance, during the Football World Cup, Jude Bellingham from England and Haaland from Norway Team showcased friendship on-screen. Fans of both the teams started circulating their videos on social-media which become famous everywhere.

However, sometimes players become aggresive during the game. This creates differences between the teams. Fans supporting those team has speacial attachement with them. This might create rivalry between the teams and their fanbase. Sometimes, countries have shared history of events from past. The citizens of the nation has pre-formed opinions because of that which creates competition between teams as people connect victory in the sports to that. For instance, India and Pakistan has joined history of partition. This leads to sentimental attachment of people to winning the game means winning against particular nation.

To conclue, the international sports is great way for people to celebrate and support their team but players should make sure their have positive sportpersonship. They should not take winning or losing personally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of international cooperation and the historical rivalry between India and Pakistan. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of how governments discuss funds to accommodate players is a bit tangential to the core debate about unity versus competition. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting detail directly reinforces the central argument regarding the impact of sports on international relations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'For instance', and 'However', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure helps the reader follow the argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'festive atmosphere', 'sentimental attachment', and 'pre-formed opinions'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'joined history' instead of 'shared history' and 'make sure their have positive sportpersonship' (should be 'ensure they demonstrate good sportsmanship'). Spelling errors like 'accomodate', 'equipments', and 'conclue' are present but do not impede communication. A more precise selection of words would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The hosting nation start preparing', 'The citizens of the nation has') and article usage (e.g., 'Sports play crucial part'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors throughout. Despite these mistakes, the meaning is consistently clear, and the errors do not significantly impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic agreement and article consistency.
