Student answer (Band 6.0)

International events play a vital role in the world. Some individuals say that sports events are a great way to enhance the good relationship between countries, whereas others think that it creates competition among countries. Although sports competition may pose a risk of competition, I firmly believe that this trend significantly brings countries together for the benefits of both people and countries.

To begin with, Olympics and sports tournaments allow people to interact with people from different backgrounds and expose them with multiple language and cultures. Such exposure tremendously enhances cultural exchange and promotes equality and harmony in society. Another crucial aspect of these events is that when countries frequently host international events, it allows them to know each other’s policies and suggest advice for better improvement. This directly promotes diplomatic relationship between nations.

On the contrary, others argue that competition creates jealousy and pride in countries. They do not take these sports events as a healthy competition. In fact, many nations invest a huge amount of funds in these events just to outperform others. In addition, during events, some viewers get engaged in violence and arguments to show that their country [is] perhaps better. Such violence not only ruins atmosphere but also leave a negative impact on people’s mind regarding sports event.

To conclude, there is no denying the fact that international sports tournament sometimes associates with unhealthy competition. However, I believe that it brings more advantages to both citizens and countries if they organised it in a more controlled and healthy way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as cultural exchange and diplomatic relations for the positive view, and nationalistic pride and violence for the negative view. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about countries suggesting advice for improvement is a bit vague and could have been supported with a concrete example. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a surface level, which prevents it from reaching the higher band descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'On the contrary', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the link between hosting events and suggesting policy advice is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately to manage the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'cultural exchange', 'diplomatic relationship', and 'unhealthy competition'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or minor errors, such as 'expose them with' (should be 'to') and 'leave a negative impact on people’s mind' (should be 'minds'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your use of topic-specific academic vocabulary would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'if they organised it' (should be 'if they organize it' or 'were to organize it') and 'some viewers get engaged in' (should be 'engage in'). There are also minor issues with articles and pluralization, such as 'ruins atmosphere' (should be 'the atmosphere') and 'people’s mind' (should be 'minds'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the grammar is functional enough to support the communication of your ideas.
