Student answer (Band 6.0)

Several individuals opine that there is an impressive method to bring nations together through global sports events like The Olympics or the Football World Cup, while others oppose that this can lead to conflict and competition among countries. In my view, these events may help players to show their talent in many parts of the world. This essay will discuss both sides and my personal view will be restated in the following paragraph.

On the one hand, these kinds of events help countries to bring together by giving chances to their players and culture. To explain it, there is diversity in the cultures of nations, when such events are organised, states share distinct rituals such as their national anthem, music and dance, which cover huge part of audience and may help to learn something new about culture. Moreover, prime ministers and celebrities are also part of these events, which may enhance the chances of trade deals between different countries, such kind of meetings increase their friendships.

On the other hand, people argue such events could lead to issues and conflicts among nations because when players compete, it can cause jealousy. To enhance it, all countries try to win matches and win gold medals. When they are defeated by the opposition then ego can build up between them, which can lead to conflicts and there are chances of major issues if both countries are already enemies. For example, India and Pakistan are enemies whenever they compete in the World Cup, public conflicts go side by side by doing bets on teams.

In conclusion, people have distinct views on international sports events, some individuals argue it is good way to bring nations together, while others say it can cause conflicts. I believe these events could help countries to lead their trade and business globally.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph touches on cultural exchange and trade, the second paragraph relies on a specific example (India and Pakistan) that is slightly underdeveloped in its explanation of the broader implications. The personal opinion is stated in the introduction and conclusion, but it is not fully integrated into the body paragraphs to support the arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more depth and that the personal opinion is clearly woven into the argumentative structure throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'To explain it' and 'To enhance it,' which do not flow naturally. Additionally, referencing is occasionally repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'opine' and 'distinct rituals,' which show a good effort. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'lead their trade' instead of 'facilitate trade' or 'ego can build up' instead of 'tensions can arise.' The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Focusing on more natural collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'oppose that this can lead to' (should be 'argue that'), 'help countries to bring together' (should be 'bring countries together'), and 'public conflicts go side by side by doing bets' (which is ungrammatical). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring greater accuracy in verb patterns and prepositional usage would improve the grammatical profile of the writing.
