Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think that global sports, such as The Football World Cup and The Olympics are a good way to bring different nations together. However, others believe that these games create more competition instead of friendship. I agree with former view and believe that these events largely foster internationally unity.

On the one hand, some advocates believe that international sports bring nations closer and promote unity among nations. In other words, when players represent their country abroad, it is not only beneficial for the country global profile but it also strengthens the bond between nations. For example, the international events such as FIFA world cup which was held in Canada, brought people from different nations at one place for over a months, providing a platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

On the other hand, a group of individuals argue that these events create competition, not friendship between countries. It creates rivalry among nations as countries compete against each other to prove their superiority. To elaborate, this competition often create conflict between the countries. For example, when India and Pakistan participated in Cricket world Cup matches the players often exchange heated word against each other and atmosphere becomes tense. Thus, it will create more conflict between nations.

In conclusion, although that international sport events sometimes lead to rivalry and conflict between nations, I believe that they predominantly promote unity and strengthen the bond between nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the example regarding the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry is a good start but could have been expanded to better illustrate the 'competition' argument. Because the response is under-length, it fails to fully develop the points to the extent required for a higher band, resulting in a partial treatment of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be more sophisticated. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'advocates', 'mutual understanding', and 'predominantly'. However, there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'internationally unity' (should be 'international unity') and 'exchange heated word' (should be 'words'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'it is not only beneficial for the country global profile' (missing possessive 'country's'), 'competition often create' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'although that international sport events' (incorrect structure). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. A wider range of error-free complex structures would be needed to reach a higher band.
