Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sports plays an essential role in human life. Opinions are divided about whether Olympics and Football matches are effective ways to bring nations together or they just create competition, not friendship, among them. While both views have vaild arguments, I support former view for varied reasons and in the following paragraphs, I will provide reasons, with relevant examples. To begin with, when two international teams play with each other, they share their thoughts and culture. By sharing culture and thoughts they can generate friendships. These type of relations also help countries to bring together. Moreover, when overseas players play in the ground, their officals come to support them. Because of this offficials of different countries can meet there and discuss about sveral other thinks such as, business and military support. Last year, one of the Asian countries signed a trade deal with western nation in an international football tournament. On the other hand, sports between two countries can lead to unhealthy competition. It is has been seen in many tournaments that many players use unparliamentry language during playing in the ground. Sometimes these type of incidents leads to rivilary among countries than friendship. Indeed, sport events provide government officials with a chance to visit other countries, but it is not neccessary these meeting will lead to business deals or economic growth. In many international games players play to show their superamacy over other teams, which obiously not a good sign of healthy relationship. In conclusion, although sometimes international games can be lead to rivilary among players and countries, I largey agree with the view that it can bring two nations together if palyers play with true sportmenship.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—whether they foster unity or create competition—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are generally extended and supported, such as when the student mentions cultural exchange and government officials meeting for trade deals. For instance, the example about an Asian country signing a trade deal during a football tournament helps support the argument. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed, and generalisations are made regarding players showing supremacy. Despite these minor limitations, the position is well-maintained and the main requirements of a General Training Task 2 essay are successfully met, aligning closely with a Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance profile.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organisation and paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, arguments for unity, counter-arguments for competition, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of the referencing and cohesion feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, phrases like 'These type of relations' and 'these type of incidents' contain grammatical friction in referencing, and the logical progression between sentences occasionally feels slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, placing the writing securely at a Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'supremacy', 'sportmanship', and 'unparliamentry'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'vaild' instead of valid, 'officals' and 'offficials' instead of officials, 'sveral' instead of several, 'thinks' instead of things, 'rivilary' instead of rivalry, 'neccessary' instead of necessary, and 'superamacy' instead of supremacy. While these errors do not severely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The lexical resource is minimally sufficient and fits the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive structures like 'While both views have vaild arguments, I support former view...' and 'although sometimes international games can be lead to rivilary...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing articles ('support former view', 'play in the ground'), subject-verb agreement ('Sports plays', 'games can be lead'), and preposition usage. Punctuation and spacing issues are also present, notably spacing anomalies in the second and third paragraphs. Although these errors occasionally distract the reader, communication is rarely impeded, placing the grammar performance solidly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
