Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on international sports events and providing a personal opinion, although the prompt asks to discuss both views and give an opinion, which is partially fulfilled. However, the response falls short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 227 words. This under-length impacts the full development of ideas. For instance, the discussion on economic benefits mentions tourists visiting 'their country' and Canada, but these ideas remain somewhat underdeveloped. The writer's position is stated in the introduction, yet the conclusion is incomplete, abruptly stating 'In conclusion, I discuss the both pros and cons' without summarizing the main arguments or clearly restating the final opinion. Consequently, these limitations restrict the task response to a Band 5.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization, utilizing transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'Another advantage is that', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the conclusion is severely truncated, consisting of a single incomplete sentence. Progression throughout the essay is sometimes disjointed due to abrupt shifts between ideas, such as moving from tourism revenue straight to motivation and fitness within the same paragraph. Furthermore, cohesive devices are occasionally repetitive or inaccurate, as seen with 'other believes that it effects on relationships' and mechanical referencing. While the overall arrangement is minimally coherent, the lack of a fully developed concluding paragraph and mechanical links place this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic level, featuring common words related to the topic such as 'tourists', 'tickets', 'hotels', and 'economic growth'. However, the range is limited and repetitive, with frequent reliance on basic phrasing like 'good amount of money' and 'higher amount of money'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'international sport events', 'it effects on relationships', 'become physical fit', and 'increases the hate'. These lexical inaccuracies and the restricted vocabulary range prevent the response from achieving a higher band, reflecting a standard consistent with Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conditional or subordinate clauses such as 'when the individuals watch the sports and they will get motivation'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('other believes', 'restaurant makes', 'it is helps'), incorrect verb forms ('it effects on', 'Government able to'), and missing articles or pluralization errors ('world fifa cup', 'physical fit'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun. Due to the frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede understanding and the limited control over complex structures, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
