Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Global events like the olympics and the football world cup connect nations and help them build great relationship off the field, while some people believe it creates rivalry but not friendship among them. Will discuss both views in the following essay and will explain my personal view that is to why we should encourage such events to take place more frequently.

International events are the platform where every country can be a part of the game; without any politics involved. Also, players participating in the games can be a role model for their leaders by showing respect for the competitor, in spite of the fact that they both are against each another. Furthermore, football is so popular in the European countries where football tournaments are organized every twice a year to unite people through such events. For instance, Neeraj Chopra from India and Arshad Khan from Pakistan praised each other performance during the javelin throw final in olympics, which was a nice gesture of showing respect.

On the contrary, some group of people believes that it creates rivalry between two nations instead of a healthy relationship. This can be seen when one team face lost in the final which eventually brings anger towards the other team, due to heat of the moment they end up swearing at each other, resulting in caos on the field which one can take very personally. For example, Egypt lost against Argentina in the world cup semi-final lead to no trade deal between these two countries.

In my opinion, international events with true sportmenship behaviour can make an impactful impression for the entire world to come together. Although sometimes it can go wrong between players, but if managed with proper advice, it's advantages overweights the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on international sports events—uniting nations versus creating rivalry—and presents a clear personal opinion that they should be encouraged. The ideas are generally relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Khan. However, some arguments lack full extension and suffer from implausible assertions, such as claiming that an Egypt-Argentina football match resulted in a broken trade deal. While the position is clear throughout, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial in places, preventing it from reaching a higher band. Overall, it satisfies the requirements of the task adequately by presenting a clear overview of both perspectives.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing separate viewpoints, and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate different arguments. However, cohesion suffers from mechanical errors and awkward transitional phrases, such as starting the second paragraph with 'International events are the platform...' without smooth linking, and the introductory sentence 'Will discuss both views...' lacking a subject. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are not always deployed flexibly, resulting in a somewhat disjointed flow between sentences. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 6 descriptor category for this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'rivalry', 'sportmenship', and 'impactful impression'. However, there are notable word-choice errors, incorrect collocations, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'olypmics' (Olympics), 'caos' (chaos), 'sportmenship' (sportsmanship), and 'overweights' (outweighs). The phrase 'every twice a year' is also unidiomatic. While these lexical slips and inaccuracies do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score, as the writer lacks the precision and control required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and concessive clauses such as 'in spite of the fact that they both are against each another' and 'if managed with proper advice, it's advantages overweights the disadvantages.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including missing subjects ('Will discuss both views'), incorrect prepositions ('against each another' instead of 'each other'), subject-verb agreement errors ('it's advantages overweights'), and tense inconsistencies. Although these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, they occur regularly enough to prevent the grammar score from rising above a Band 5.5.
