Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undeniable that people travel internationally to enjoy sports events such as the Football World Cup. While some people believe that these type of international events are the best way to bring nations together, other argue that it would increase competition rather than friendship. I will discuss about both views in the upcoming paragraphs and will give my opinion at the end of essay.

On the one side, why some people believe that good way to bring countries together is to arrange sports event because sports is the common interest among all people. To explain it more clearly, when topic is about sports, many people forget about rivarly or competition as they just want to enjoy it. Furthermore, individuals show a lot of interest when sports held internationally. For example, recently, many people from every corner travelled to America to watch the Football Word Cup matches and craze about those games was insane. Laslty, these kinds of events bring nations together as they need to work together.

On the other side, some people think that international sports create more chaos because every nations want to win the competition. As a result, atheltes are more serious about winning the games than enjoying it. In fact, sometimes this can lead to a huge fight which is not only within sport persons but also within fans. For exmaple, Sri Lanka cricket team made a huge mess in their hotel rooms when they faced a loss during Cricket World Cup. Hence, it is heavy duty to arrange such kind of sports events.

To conclude, although arranging international events come with negative side such as risk of fight or purely seen as rivarly, I still believe that hosting such events can bring people together and people will happily attend these events to enjoy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events (bringing nations together versus creating competition and conflict) and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as mentioning common interests and the potential for fan aggression, though some supporting points are somewhat generalized or briefly stated, as seen in the underdeveloped final sentence of the second body paragraph ('Hence, it is heavy duty...'). The overall position is maintained throughout. This performance aligns well with the requirements for Band 6.5 to Band 7.0, ultimately fitting comfortably into Band 6.0 due to some under-development in the arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, including an introduction, two distinct body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'While some people believe', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and transitional links occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'On the one side, why some people believe that good way...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately overall, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as 'common interest', 'rivalry or competition', and 'fan aggression/fight'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'these type' instead of 'these types', 'Word Cup' instead of 'World Cup', 'craze about those games was insane' which is too informal, and 'heavy duty' used inappropriately to mean burdensome. Spelling and word-formation errors, such as 'atheltes' and 'Laslty', do not impede communication but prevent the score from rising higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at subordinate clauses using 'While', 'when', and 'although'. However, there is a persistent presence of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'other argue' instead of 'others argue', 'I will discuss about' (unnecessary preposition), and missing articles ('when topic is about sports', 'when sports held'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur frequently, they rarely impede overall communication. This profile corresponds well to Band 5.5.
