IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate aboout whether organising international sports events like The Olympics or Fifa World Cup would bring nations from different parts of the world together, while others contend that it would rather result in competition than freindship. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my personal point of view.

To begine with, those who support the former view argue that people get an opportunity to meet like minded individuals by attending such events. To be more specific, fans across the globe travel internationally to watch live sports while sharing the common stadium, meaning they spend a considerable amout of time talking and chatting with each others. As a consequence, it creates strong relationships among them. To give an example, during 2026 Fifa World Cup, the host nation Canada has seen a plethora of people, across the world, spending time with strangers at not only stadiums but also at fan parks.

Converesely, proponents of the opposing view maintain that it would create conflicts and competition among countries instead of friendship. This is primarily because people have a tendency to hate opponent teams and their supportors especially when their team is not performing as per their expectations. This is particularly evident in interantional cricket matches between India and Pakistan as major tournaments between these two nations in the past had seen fans fighting with each other when their oponnent team performs better. However, these problems can be tacklled effectively through corodinated efforts by the governments by implementing stringengt rules and regulations against people who create such difficulties in the stadium. Therefore, I also agree that hosting sports events at an international level is an effective way to bring countries together.

Overall, although some people believe that hosting international sports events may result in conflicts and fights among spectators, I belive that issue can be solved by the officials and it is a good way to make people share the same stage accross the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that international sports events bring countries together and that they create competition and conflict—while clearly stating a personal opinion throughout the essay. The student develops ideas adequately, such as explaining how fans meet like-minded individuals and how rivalries can flare up during matches. The example of the Fifa World Cup is relevant, although the reference to the 2026 World Cup is slightly forward-looking or hypothetical, and the mention of India-Pakistan cricket matches directly supports the counter-argument. The position is well-supported and leads to a logical conclusion, satisfying the main requirements for a Band 7.0 performance in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The writing is divided into four distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "To begin with," "Conversely," and "Therefore," although there are some mechanical transitions. Paragraphing is handled effectively, ensuring that each major idea is separated. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as using "that issue" in the conclusion without a completely tight antecedent. Overall, the flow and structural progression meet the standards of a Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and generally sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "like-minded individuals," "plethora," and "co-ordinated efforts." However, there are a number of spelling and word-choice errors scattered throughout the text, including "aboout," "freindship," "begine," "amout," "each others" instead of "each other," "Converesely," "supportors," "interantional," "oponnent," "tacklled," "corodinated," "stringengt," and "belive." While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the lexical score from reaching the higher bands where greater accuracy and spelling control are expected, fitting securely within Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses like "especially when their team is not performing as per their expectations" and "people who create such difficulties in the stadium." There are several grammatical and mechanical errors, particularly regarding punctuation and spelling affecting word forms, but the syntax is varied enough to ensure readability. The errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to preclude a higher band. Consequently, the grammar reflects a solid Band 6.0 level.
