Student answer (Band 6.0)

Although many individuals believe that international sports create an environment of competition rather than friendship between countries, others think these events such as Olympics or the Football World Cup, are great ways to bring countries together. According to my perspective, these events are a good opportunity to experience different cultures and languages. This essay will shed a light on both statements before forming a conclusion.

To begin with, there are a plenty of postive aspects of games which are performed at international level. Firstly, these events can increase the confidence of players as they may practice more to achieve a higher level and get a chance to explore different beliefs and people. Since there are different kind of people from various coutries, players have a great chance to learn co-operation and new methods to increase their efficiency levels in specific fields.

However, there are numerous reasons for people's opinions that worldwide games can create a competition among countires. First of all, when a country achieves a higher score in any sport than this may create a feeling of hate or aggression by opposite players. Another cause is that this can decrease the level of confidence among players. Although members of a team are best for their own country and pratice very hard to achieve a position in the world, when they lose the game than they feel themselves weaker than other team. These games are not meant of comparison of skills but everyone think that different nations show their power by their expertise in games.

To conclude, even though there are various postive aspects of games like The Olympics or the Football World Cup, for instance these events give chance to players to explore different cultures and built team work among members, the reasons for which people do not want these events like these can create a feeling of hate and can low self-esteem among teams cannot be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views (that international sports bring countries together and that they create competition and hostility) and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and body paragraphs. The ideas are generally relevant, mentioning cultural exchange, confidence building, and the psychological impact of losing. However, some arguments lack full extension and suffer from slight logical gaps; for instance, the assertion that losing decreases confidence is somewhat repetitive and under-developed. Despite these minor limitations in depth, the response meets the core requirements of Task Response for Band 6.0, as all prompt components are addressed with a clear overarching position throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct paragraphs for each view. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'To conclude' are employed to structure the text, though some referencing and connective choices are a bit mechanical or faulty, such as 'than this may create' and 'when they lose the game than they feel'. Overall, the logical flow is clear enough to guide the reader smoothly through the discussion, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'international level', 'efficiency levels', and 'cultural exchange'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'a plenty of postive aspects', 'different kind of people', 'coutries' (spelling), and 'low self-esteem' instead of 'lower self-esteem'. These errors do not impede communication, as the writer's meaning remains clear, but the frequency of lexical inaccuracies prevents the score from reaching a Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Although many individuals believe that...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, particularly with article usage, prepositions, and comparative structures, such as 'shed a light', 'there are a plenty', 'than this may create', and 'not meant of comparison'. Punctuation and verb tense slips are also noticeable ('pratice' instead of 'practice', 'built' instead of 'build'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they demonstrate inconsistent control over complex structures, placing the response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
