Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, a lot of people are debating over whether games such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup is a perfect way to merge spectators from different countries together, or it promotes competition. This essay will discuss how these games help strengthen team bonding while it can lead to harsh debate and rivalry. I firmly believe that it's a positive development and governments and corporate companies should promote it.

Firstly, the major benefit is team bonding. This means that colleagues, who work for the same company/business can share their ideas and views independently. People get a chance to meet new colleagues and learn from their experiences and culture. For instance, the recent Fifa Football World Cup event helped my friend to bond quicker with his new co-workers, as most of them were supporting the Spain team. Spectators binge watch the matches in local pubs and socialise with new people. Similarly, The Olympics is a big catalyst to bring people from various geographical areas together, as these games have players from 150+ countries around the globe.

However, there are also significant drawbacks to hosting popular sports tournaments. Firstly, one of the primary disadvantages is the verbal arguments. These games are filled with suspense and stress to viewers, which causes unwanted and unfruitful arguments between two sets of supporters. These moments can lead to violence. For instance, sports games between India and Pakistan always lead to heated moments such as breaking windows and seats in the stadium.

To conclude, the primary advantage such having great understanding between colleagues is required to make business successful in corporate world. However, it can often lead to a harsh exchange of comments and arguments, which spreads stress and anxiety.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the task by discussing how international sports events bring people together through team bonding and how they can create competition and rivalry. A clear position is stated in the introduction, declaring it a positive development. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed in places. For instance, the argument regarding team bonding shifts quickly into personal anecdotes about colleagues and local pubs rather than focusing broadly on international relations or societal unity. Similarly, the conclusion introduces a new idea about business success which was not fully explored in the body paragraphs. Despite these limitations, the main aspects of the prompt are covered, earning a solid Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion effectively. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and logical progression are sometimes faulty. For instance, the transition in the conclusion abruptly links international sports events to making business successful in the corporate world, which feels disconnected from the previous arguments. Additionally, some sentences within the body paragraphs lack smooth linking, making the flow occasionally mechanical. Overall, it satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'catalyst', 'suspense', and 'unfruitful'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'such having great understanding' in the conclusion and 'sports games' instead of 'matches' or 'fixtures'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'debate over whether games... is a perfect way', where subject-verb agreement with the plural 'games' is missed. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but limitations in precision and control keep it at a Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'whether games... is a perfect way' (agreement error) and 'such having great understanding' (missing preposition/gerund control). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, showing a decent variety of structures alongside persistent minor errors.
