Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt by discussing the views that international sports events unite countries and that they create competition, while also providing a personal opinion. However, the ideas are quite limited and under-developed, lacking sufficient support and explanation. Furthermore, the response is significantly under the minimum word count requirement, containing only 189 words instead of the required 250. This brevity severely restricts the student's ability to fully extend and develop their arguments, which pulls down the overall task achievement score. Band descriptors for Band 5 are reflected here due to the limited development of ideas and failure to meet length requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text displays some basic organization, touching on general health, advantages, and disadvantages. However, there is a clear lack of overall progression and poor paragraphing. The response consists of a series of choppy sentences and erratic spacing rather than cohesive, well-structured paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inappropriately, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., abrupt shifts in thought such as 'If I talk about advantages...'). The lack of a clear introduction and conclusion further disrupts the logical flow of the essay, aligning the text with Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited, basic range of vocabulary, such as 'good', 'sports', 'play a crucial role', and 'advantages'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and expression, such as 'friendship also disturbs between countries' and 'improvement of country economic'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic ideas, the frequent errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing prevent the response from reaching higher bands. Words are often repeated without adequate paraphrasing, placing this performance solidly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic connectors. When the student attempts more complex constructions, they are often faulty or run-on sentences, such as 'If I talk about advantages I can say sports events that happens at international level like Olympics or Football World Cup, these are good opportunities...'. There are frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and tense agreement (e.g., 'happens' instead of 'happen', 'sport good for'). These persistent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the criteria for Band 5.
