Student answer (Band 6.0)

Sport games always have a positive impact. It is often argued that international sports events are a great way to bring countries together, and I also agree to this. Whereas, others believe that these games cause rivalry between competing countries. This essay will discuss both views and explain how physical games are a healthier option to bring people from different countries together on a single platform.

There are several reasons why people believe that international games are a best source to bring different countries together. The primary reason is bringing people from different countries on a single ground, and enjoy the event. For instance, football worldcup held in Canada few months ago, many individuals from different countries applied the visit visa, to go there and watch the match live. As Canada granted visa to tourists to our country as well, so on large grounds both countries develop a positive relation. Furthermore, when a sports event is organised in a country, player teams from different states that are playing come there. The host provides great care and security to them, which also bring those countries together and leave a positive impact on each other. Therefore, in my opinion, World Cup matches are a great idea for bringing World together.

On the other hand, there are people who argue that these events create a competition between countries rather than friendship. This is because such games create a rivalry between them. No doubt, competition is present, but it is a healthy competition. This competition is present till the match is going on, once the game is over, everyone is on the same ground, meeting and greeting each other, leaving no negative impact.

In conclusion, both the views have their merits. Although international sports are a source for bringing countries together, no doubt to some extend it creates a sense of competition between them. However, these events cause more positive impact in this devasting World. So, in my opinion, such events should be arranged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that international sports events bring countries together and that they create competition—while clearly stating the writer's own opinion throughout. The position is consistently maintained. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the mention of the football world cup held in Canada and the hospitality provided to player teams. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration and border on generalisation, such as stating broadly that tourists visiting for the match develops positive relations. Despite these minor limitations, the task is covered well with a clear stance, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile. We award a Band 7.0 as all parts are addressed and the position is clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are divided into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction that outlines the essay structure, followed by body paragraphs dedicated to each view, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The primary reason', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitional links occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and phrases like 'on large grounds' or 'on a single ground' show slight repetition and unnatural collocation in terms of cohesion. Progression is logical overall, earning a solid Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'international sports events', 'rivalry', 'hospitality' (implied by care and security), and 'healthy competition'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'Sport games' instead of 'Sports games', 'a best source' instead of 'the best source', 'applied the visit visa' instead of 'applied for a tourist visa', and 'devasting World' instead of 'devastated world' or 'tumultuous world'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical errors limit precision, placing this firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional and subordinate clauses such as 'When a sports event is organised in a country, player teams... come there' and 'Although international sports are a source for bringing countries together...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including missing articles ('applied the visit visa', 'held in Canada few months ago'), incorrect prepositions ('develop a positive relation'), and slight tense inconsistencies. Nonetheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout, justifying a Band 6.0.
