Student answer (Band 6.0)

A few people think that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring nations together. Others trust that these events create jealousy, not friendship, between countries. In my opinion, this is the best way to create a social bond between citizens. This essay will discuss the significance of such events to create social connection. Conversely, it will also explain why these events make people feel envious.

On the one hand, sports events play an important role by bringing various people together. This is because when various nationalities sit together, they share their values, cultures, as well as traditions. When they communicate with each other, there is a better chance that their bond would become strong. For instance, when they meet together, they may talk about different cuisines belong to their country. Consequently, there is a better chance that they would like to connect on social media platforms.

On the other hand, these events could make the audience feel jelous. If they see their country's team loosing, they may not like it. This is something that happens many times. Even sometimes the audience starts fighting with the opponent team's people. For example, in the year 2016, the Cricket World Cup between India and Pakistan was held in New Delhi, India. There was a big chaos happened over there. As team India was winning that is why the fans belong to the opponent team started fighting. Therefore, these incidents sometimes create boundries.

In my opinion, although sports events play an important role by creating social bonding, it has few adverse effects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views (bringing countries together versus creating competition/jealousy) and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, but some are slightly repetitive or under-developed. For instance, the discussion on social media connections is somewhat simplistic, and the example regarding the 2016 Cricket World Cup contains factual inaccuracies regarding location and context, yet it still effectively supports the point about crowd hostility. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, positioning the response firmly at Band 6.0 in terms of task coverage and development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear four-paragraph structure that follows an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and paragraph links can be mechanical or repetitive, particularly the phrase 'there is a better chance that' which is overused in the first body paragraph. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, ensuring an overall coherent progression of ideas, which aligns with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main ideas. There are attempts to use less common or topic-specific vocabulary such as 'adversely effects', 'significance', and 'cuisines'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'trust that' instead of 'believe that', spelling errors like 'jelous' and 'loosing' instead of 'losing', and 'big chaos happened' instead of 'chaos erupted'. These inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, placing the lexical performance at Band 5.5 to 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'If they see their country's team loosing...'). However, grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('it has few adverse effects' referring to plural 'sports events'), tense shifts, and prepositions ('belong to their country' instead of 'from their country'). While these errors are noticeable and require some effort from the reader, they do not completely impede communication, satisfying the criteria for Band 5.5.
