IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that international games bring regions together while others argue that these types of events increase the rivalry between countries. However, I believe that international sports events like The Olympics, Football World Cup and Cricket World Cup bring people together as this allows people to connect with other people.
Worldwide sports competitions allow people to connect as a group. This means that people with the same passion come together and support their favourite team or sportsman. Even though they are from various regions, they sit together and cheer for their favourite team along with other individuals. This creates harmony among countries. As an example, in the Football World Cup, fans from different countries support their idol sportsman or team. Additionally, some countries organise friendship matches between countries to make peace. Therefore, the international sports events are a good way to bring countries together.
On the other hand, some people think that these events create competition among countries. This is because individuals who are addicted to sports events become more emotional over losses. Thus, they make aggressive decisions. For instance, in the 2024 Cricket World Cup, fans of the runners-up team fought with the rival team's fans over their loss. Hence, the international sports events create problems and misunderstandings between countries.
In conclusion, while some believe that sports events create rivalry among countries, I believe international games bring people and countries together because sports allow people to sit together and support their idol sportsman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—bringing countries together versus creating rivalry—and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the length requirement is NOT met, as the response contains 245 words, which is 5 words short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length impacts the full development of ideas, leading to a minor penalty under Task Achievement. While the ideas are relevant, such as the mention of fans cheering together and the example of friendship matches, the supporting arguments remain somewhat repetitive and lack deeper elaboration. For instance, the example provided of the 2024 Cricket World Cup fan fight is brief. Consequently, the performance aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors for task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical paragraph structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concluding paragraph. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions between ideas, such as "On the other hand" and "Additionally." However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly with phrases like "This means that" and "This is because." Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional over-reliance on basic demonstrative pronouns limits the flow. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms such as "international sports events," "rivalry," "harmony," and "runners-up." There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though these are sometimes accompanied by slight unnaturalness or repetition, such as "idol sportsman" or "addicted to sports events." Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication. However, the lack of more sophisticated lexical chunks and occasional repetition of words like "people" and "countries" keep the score at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures. Complex structures are attempted with subordinating conjunctions like "even though" and "while." There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as "therefore, the international sports events are" (superfluous definite article) and "idol sportsman" (which should be pluralised or phrased differently when referring to athletes in general). Punctuation is generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. This balanced performance across simple and complex sentences fits the Band 6 descriptor well.
