IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that international games bring regions together while others argue that these types of events increase the rivalry between countries. However, I believe that international sports events like the Olympics, the Football World Cup and the Cricket World Cup bring people together as this allows people to connect with others.
Worldwide sports competitions allow people to connect as a group. This means that people with the same passion come together and support their favourite team or sportsman. Even though they are from various regions, they sit together and cheer for their favourite team along with other individuals. This creates harmony among countries. As an example, in the Football World Cup, fans from different countries support their favourite sportsman or team. Additionally, some countries organise friendship matches between countries to make peace. Therefore, international sports events are a good way to bring countries together.
On the other hand, some people think that these events create competition among countries. This is because individuals who are addicted to sports events become more emotional over losses. Thus, they make aggressive decisions. For instance, in the 2024 Cricket World Cup, fans of the runners-up team fought with the rival team's fans over their loss. Hence, international sports events create problems and misunderstandings between countries.
In conclusion, while some believe that sports events create rivalry among countries, I believe international games bring people and countries together because sports allow people to sit together and support their preferred sportsman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—whether they unite nations or cause rivalry—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the response contains only 244 words. This slight under-length limitation restricts the depth of development, resulting in a penalty to the task response score. Ideas are relevant, such as fans connecting through shared passions, but the example of the '2024 Cricket World Cup' is historically inaccurate as no such men's world cup occurred in 2024. Despite these limitations, the position is clear throughout, aligning with the requirements for a Band 6.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression. Information and ideas are organized into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'However', 'Worldwide sports competitions', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times somewhat mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'This means that' and 'This is because'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the overall mechanical nature of the cohesive ties places this response firmly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'addicted to sports events', 'aggressive decisions', and 'rivalry'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to sports fans as 'addicted to sports events' rather than passionate or fanatical. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas without impeding the reader. Because the range is adequate but lacks the flexibility, precision, and sophistication required for higher bands, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'Even though they are from various regions, they sit together...' and 'while some believe that sports events create rivalry...'. There is a good variety of sentence types, and grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled. While there are a few minor awkward phrasing issues, errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication. The writer shows good control over simple structures and demonstrates an ability to produce complex sentences with reasonable accuracy, matching the Band 6.0 descriptors.
