IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that international games bring regions together while others argue that these types of events increase the rivalry between countries. However, I believe that international sports events like the Olympics, the Football World Cup and the Cricket World Cup bring people together as this allows people to connect with others.

Worldwide sports competitions allow people to connect as a group. This means that people with the same passion come together and support their favourite team or sportsman. Even though they are from various regions, they sit together and cheer for their favourite team along with other individuals. This creates harmony among countries. As an example, in the Football World Cup, fans from different countries support their favourite sportsman or team. Additionally, some countries organise friendly matches to make peace. Therefore, international sports events are a good way to bring countries together.

On the other hand, some people think that these events create competition among countries. This is because individuals who are addicted to sports events become more emotional over losses. Thus, they make aggressive decisions. For instance, in the 2024 Cricket World Cup, fans of the runners-up team fought with the rival team's fans over their loss. Hence, international sports events create problems and misunderstandings between countries.

In conclusion, while some believe that sports events create rivalry among countries, I believe international games bring people and countries together because sports allow people to sit together and support their preferred sportsman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—bringing countries together versus creating competition and rivalry—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the response falls slightly short of the minimum length requirement, containing 242 words instead of the required 250 words. This under-length impacts the depth of the ideas. While the supporting examples, such as mentioning the Football World Cup and the 2024 Cricket World Cup, are relevant, the development remains somewhat limited and repetitive, preventing the score from reaching Band 6.5 or higher. Ideas are stated and supported with simple examples, but they lack extended analysis. Consequently, the performance aligns best with Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concluding paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Worldwide sports competitions allow', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text, though referencing is sometimes slightly mechanical or repetitive, as seen with frequent repetition of phrases like 'favourite team' or 'bring countries together'. Paragraphs have a clear central topic, maintaining an adequate level of cohesion that satisfies the Band 6 descriptors comfortably, though it lacks the more flexible and sophisticated organizational control found at Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'harmony among countries', 'aggressive decisions', and 'rivalry'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to people who are 'addicted to sports events' when 'passionate' or 'fanatical' would be more natural. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and communication is never impeded by lexical errors. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, it lacks the broader flexibility and precision required to achieve a Band 7 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses correctly as seen in sentences like 'Even though they are from various regions, they sit together and cheer for their favourite team along with other individuals.' There are some grammatical structures used accurately, but the range of complex structures remains somewhat limited. Errors are infrequent and do not impede communication; punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well throughout the text. Because there is a good control of basic structures and some successful complex forms with only minor errors, the writing fits comfortably into the Band 6 category.
