IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, there is considerable debate about whether international events bring countries together. While others think those events may create competition rather than freindship. This essay will discuss both the sides of the statement before presenting my own perspective.
On the one side, In olympics, number of different countries take part and compete with each other which shows a healthy competition. This leads to a strong friendship between countries when sports persons who are more likley to encourage and motivate each other. This shows their sportsman ship and strengthen their relationship. For example, a few decades ago there was a sport competition held between India and Pakistan which had a war related to Kashmir. Both the countries Prime ministers decided to play a healthy cricket match after the war to show the world about their new friendship. As a result, citizens of both the countries meet each other and show their love and affection.
On the other side, some people take these events more seroiusly. They see the match rivalary to the countries rivalry.
