Some people believe that international sports events, such as The Olympics or the Football World Cup, are a good way to bring countries together. Others say that these events create competition, not friendship, between countries.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is a notion that international sports events enhance the relationship between the countries and thus helps economic affairs. However, some individuals believe that this situation can create the competition, enemies among the different nations. In my opinion, promoting a big sports event can be beneficial for participating countries.

On the one hand, organizing sports events at globle level, brings nations together in sense of maintaining peace, exchanging the cultural values and economical benefits. To explain this, when people visits foreign countries, tourism of local city increases. This improves employment in the local area. For example, FIFA worldcup was organized in Toronto, Canada in 2026, where veiwers from the other countries visited and this promoted the local businesses. Due to this, individuals learn about other cultures, norms and value their roots.

On the other hand, some believe this creates the tension among conutries as fanclubs support and cheers for their nations. It can happen that visitors might consider other players as their enemies if their country is defeated by them. For example, every time when cricket match is being held, between India and pakistan, creates stressful environment. This affects the political affairs and peace among the nations.

To conclude, it is noted that organizing sports events at global level such as FIFA and Olympic can be productive as it can improve the economy, relations and the peace. Although these events has advantages on hosting countries, relations among nations can be at risk because fans support their players and consider opposition as an enemy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that international sports events foster unity and economic growth, and that they create tension and rivalry. The writer also provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and reiterates it in the conclusion. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as mentioning tourism and the economic impact, as well as the rivalry seen in cricket matches between India and Pakistan. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration, such as the causal link between sports and political affairs, which places this response comfortably at Band 6.5. The position is clearly maintained throughout, and the main ideas are all relevant to the core theme.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally become slightly mechanical or faulty, as seen in phrases like 'when people visits foreign countries' or minor awkward transitions between sentences. Despite these minor lapses, the logical flow is maintained throughout the response, justifying a Band 6.5 for this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'enhance', 'economical benefits', and 'stressful environment'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'create the competition' instead of 'create competition', 'globle level' (spelling error), and 'when cricket match is being held... creates'. These lexical slips and minor spelling mistakes slightly impede precision, though communication remains clear at all times. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'Although these events has advantages on hosting countries, relations among nations can be at risk...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward agreements throughout the text, including 'thus helps economic affairs' (subject-verb agreement), 'when people visits' (subject-verb agreement), and 'events has' instead of 'events have'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips in complex structures prevents the score from reaching Band 7. The errors rarely impede overall communication, supporting a solid Band 6 rating.
