Student answer (Band 6.0)
Social or formal gathering is an interesting event where a person can get chance to meet others. An international competitive sports contest is a platform where individual meet with other countries people. Some people agree with this statement, while opponents believe that these type of tournaments just makes competition. This essay will discuss both the views before giving my opinion.
Proponents of this view argue that, the sports events are very beneficial for any country and individual, as it attracts large number of people from different ethnicity. Moreover, due to this they share their ideas and culture through friendships, that helps countries development. In addition, it provides platform to the smaller players who has skill and talent to play at international level competition. For instance, Marycom who was boxing player in India, but she has no platform to play and that is why people were not more aware about women boxing competition. After playing at international level she makes India proud . So, due to this reasons these type of tournaments help nations.
On the other side of the debate, adversaries claim that sports events does not help that much. It just creates competition among countries. Furthermore, people have different ideology and language that is why they do not have common views and thinking like, in recent India-China cricket match , due their language barrier player cannot make friendship with each other. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events—whether they bring countries together or create competition—and includes the writer's own opinion. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed, which aligns with Band 6 descriptors. For instance, the discussion regarding the India-China cricket match in the third paragraph is underdeveloped and relies on a questionable generalization about language barriers inhibiting friendship. While the example of Mary Kom is relevant, the explanation lacks depth. To reach a higher band, the student needs to extend their arguments with more thorough explanations and concrete societal examples rather than relying on brief assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dedicating distinct sections to the introduction, proponents' view, adversaries' view, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'To recapitulate'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrase 'On the other side of the debate' introduces the counter-argument effectively, but the flow within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'So, due to this reasons these type of tournaments help nations.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but logical progression between sentences could be smoother to secure a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'ethnicity', 'adversaries', and 'recapitulate'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'individual meet with other countries people' instead of 'individuals meet people from other countries', 'these type of tournaments' instead of 'these types of tournaments', and 'who was boxing player' instead of 'who was a boxer'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and these errors do not seriously impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses ('who has skill and talent') and conditional or concessive clauses ('though among few countries... people cannot share thoughts'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'a person can get chance', 'this essay will discuss both the views', 'due to this reasons', and 'countries who has a good relationships'. Punctuation is also occasionally problematic, with unnecessary commas preceding dependent clauses. Because these errors persist and occur frequently throughout the text, the grammar aligns with the Band 5 descriptors.
