Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events and clearly stating a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning economic benefits, tourism development, and historical contexts like the 1990 cricket match example. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or lack deeper elaboration, such as the brief mention of the 1990 cricket match without specific details. The position is clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7 descriptors, though the development remains somewhat straightforward.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'TO BEGIN WITH', 'MOREOVER', and 'ON OTHER HAND', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but sentence-to-sentence flow could be smoother to reach higher bands. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, utilizing terms like 'CONTEMPERORY', 'SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE IMPACT', 'HOSTING COUNTRIES', and 'ENEMITY'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'CONTEMPERORY' instead of contemporary, 'BELIVE' instead of believe, 'EXCALLATE' instead of escalate, and 'SENCE' instead of sense. Despite these errors, the lexical range is adequate for communication, aligning with Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'MOST OF THE SPORTS EVENTS ARE CONDUCTED IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES SO THEY WILL GET THE CHANCE TO INTERACT...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and word forms, such as 'THE FOOTBALL IS THE GOOD WAY' and 'FOR CERTAIN EXTEND'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization throughout the text. These errors do not impede overall communication but prevent the score from rising higher.
