Student answer (Band 6.0)

A few people claim that world games such as The olympics or the Football World Cup are a good way to unite countries whereas, others believe that these create a tough competition between countries rather than friendhip. This essay discusses both the views before stating my opinion about these global games create competition not a friendship such as players working hard to bring pride to their country.

As olympics or a world cup is a competition between countries, player mindset is all about defeating other countries and reach to finale rather than creating friendship and making memories. Inorder to achieve the cup or the gold medal athletes train their body and mind dialy physically and mentally to bring pride for their country. For example, athletes from countries such as india and pakistan can no longer be friends as they both fight for their countries dreadfully. Therefore, players attending the event to play, win and make their country proud.

On the other hand, eventhough international games create tension, competition between countries still there are some benefits when countries unite for olympics. Athletes from one country train, live and eat together with other countries before the olympics. Therefore, this creates a strong bond and connection sometimes in the players as they spent their whole time together. Whereas, most of the players are likely to made up their mind that they will not deviate from their goal and they may not allow someone to their privacy and train themselves. Players believe that they will only return to their country after winning a cup or the medal.

In conclusion, eventhough olympics is a way to unite countries as they train, eat and live together while, players mind is always about winning the medal and bring pride for their country instead of cretaing friendship and connection for themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on international sports events and providing the writer's own opinion, which is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as athletes training hard for national pride versus the potential for bonding during pre-competition training. However, some arguments are slightly repetitive or under-developed, particularly regarding the counter-argument about athletes living and eating together. The position is generally clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors where all parts are addressed though some areas remain slightly underdeveloped or repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen with transitional phrases like 'whereas, others believe' and 'On the other hand, eventhough international games create tension'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally hindered by abrupt shifts in ideas, such as the sudden transition within the third paragraph regarding athletes' privacy. Paragraphing is present, but overall logical flow suffers from minor mechanical linking and repetitive referencing, matching the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'international sports events', 'national pride', and 'athletic training'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'The olympics' (capitalisation), 'friendhip', 'dialy', 'eventhough', 'made up their mind' instead of 'made up their minds', and 'cretaing'. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these inaccuracies in spelling and word collocation place the response firmly in the Band 5 to 6 range, warranting a 5.5 due to errors that occasionally distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'player mindset is all about' instead of 'players' mindsets are', 'reach to finale' instead of 'reaching the finals', and missing plural forms in 'bring pride for their country'. Punctuation errors also occur, such as comma splices and missing commas after introductory clauses. Because these errors persist across complex structures yet rarely completely impede communication, the response fits the Band 6 descriptor well.
